The UK tour of The Bodyguard brings the high-stakes, romantic thriller to life on stage, expertly balancing the glitz of a pop concert with the tension of a dark TV drama. Telling the story of superstar Rachel Marron and Frank Farmer – the former Secret Service agent hired to protect her from an obsessive stalker – the show manages to be both a spectacular showcase of Whitney Houston’s greatest hits and a genuinely gripping theatrical experience.

The show doesn’t gently ease you into your seat; it commands your attention from the absolute second the house lights fade. Opening with an explosive rendition of “Queen of the Night,” the production immediately immerses the audience into the high-octane world of a global mega-celebrity. What follows is a clever juxtaposition of high-energy, upbeat musical numbers and gritty, suspenseful drama. The creative use of video projection enhances the unsettling presence of the stalker, prompting audible gasps and genuine jumps from a captivated audience.
Adam Garcia stars as Frank Farmer, while widely celebrated for his incredible song-and-dance background, Garcia proves his versatility here with a stellar, deeply grounded acting performance. He anchors the show with an effortless charisma.
James-Lee Harris plays The Stalker, also the production’s Dance Captain, Harris delivers a masterclass in physical tension. He manages to chill the entire auditorium with minimal movement – a simple stance or the putting on of a coat feels laced with danger. (A special nod goes to the curtain call, where he gets to shed the sinister persona, join the ensemble, and show off his fun side).
Sidonie Smith & Sasha Monique play Rachel & Nicki Marron. Both women deliver absolutely powerhouse vocal performances, tackling some of the most demanding tracks in the musical theatre canon with immense skill and emotion.
By the time the final notes ring out, the tension breaks and turns into a full-blown celebration. The creative team smartly taps into the audience’s energy, transforming the auditorium into a giant party with a closing rendition of “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” Singing and dancing along with a room full of strangers leaves you with a brilliant, infectious buzz.
Whether you are a die-hard fan of the original film, a Whitney Houston devotee, or just looking for a thrilling night out, The Bodyguard delivers on every front. Highly recommended. https://www.atgtickets.com/venues/liverpool-empire/whats-on/
