In the extremely intimate space of The Drayton Arms Theatre, Burnt Orange Theatre Company presents Nick Payne’s ‘Constellations’ under the masterful direction and production of Rosie Thomas. The play delves into the intricate tapestry of human relationships through the stories of string theorist Marianne and beekeeper Roland, in a way that defies theatrical norms, intertwining multiple alternate narratives and exploring the complexities of love through the lens of quantum physics. Sounds complex, but through this beautiful and heartwarming production, audiences are swept into the lives of various characters as they navigate forwards, backwards and sideways, the vast expanse of human emotions, from profound love to heartbreaking loss.
‘Constellations’ is a truly exceptional piece of writing from Nick Payne, and what sets it apart is its ability to evoke genuine emotion. As the characters grapple with the intricacies of life and love, the audience is taken on an emotional journey, experiencing moments of laughter, tears, and everything in between, a scientific study of the human condition. What truly distinguishes this particular production is the remarkable talent of its young ensemble cast. With fourteen actors from Burnt Orange Theatre gracing the tiny stage, each induvial performance is a testament to their skill and dedication, and to the training they receive from this award-winning rep company. From tender moments of intimacy to raw displays of despair, every emotion is conveyed with an authenticity and precision that far exceeds the age of each performer.
Under the meticulous direction of Rosie Thomas, the young cast excels in their portrayal of complex characters. Their chemistry, as they swap and change across the complex narrative is palpable, drawing the audience into their world and keeping them captivated throughout the 90-minute performance. The performances of Lauren Mcintyre (Marianne), Zoe Agbon (Roland), Vere Van Den Broek (Marianne), and Ioan Oosthuizen (Roland) shone particularly brighter than the other young stars (or to be scientific “protostars”) within the cast, although through powerful performances and thought-provoking storytelling, Burnt Orange Theatre Company delivers a production of ‘Constellations’ that resonates into infinity and beyond, long after the final curtain call. This production really is proof of the enduring power of live performance, and the universal themes that bind us all.
