Jonathan O’Boyle’s production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas at the Mill at Sonning offers a delightful escape into festive cheer, perfectly defying the post-lunch slump. The story follows Bob and Phil, two old army buddies and successful performers, who join forces with the charming Haynes Sisters, Betty and Judy, to save a struggling Vermont inn owned by their former General. Together, they plan a spectacular Christmas show to boost the inn’s finances, enlisting their old army division for support. It’s a classic tale of friendship, love, and the magic of the holidays.
Gary Lloyd’s choreography truly stands out, featuring a fabulous tap dancing sequence that leaves the audience wanting more and the performers a bit breathless—in the best way possible. Jason Denver’s luscious set design and Natalie Titchener’s impeccable costumes ensure that no expense is spared in creating a merry, immersive atmosphere. The lighting by David Howe and sound design by Chris Whybrow perfectly complement the vibrant performances, enhancing the overall festive mood.
The cast is solid across the board. Jason Jajdi (Bob) and Connor Hughes (Phil) share great chemistry, bringing their characters to life with ease. However, it’s the Haynes Sisters, portrayed by Gabriella Williams and Nic Myers, who steal the show with their stunning vocals, energetic dancing, and rapid costume changes—all while navigating stairs in heels.
While White Christmas offers simple, pure escapism, some character traits and gender dynamics, along with its praise of the American army, might not resonate as well with younger audiences. Nevertheless, the production shines through its infectious energy, stunning performances, and beautiful visuals. Whether you’re a fan of classic musicals or simply looking for a joyful holiday outing, White Christmas is a delightful choice. It wraps up the day with a festive spirit that leaves you humming the tunes and bobbing your head long after the final bow.
