An age old festive tale is brought to life in Salford

Award winning theatre company Carnival of Eternal Light return to the stage with their very first seasonal production - A Christmas Carol. Based on the immensely popular and legendary novel of Charles Dickens Carnival bring to life this much-loved classic as miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is taught the error of his ways and taken on a voyage across the past, present and future of his life. Comedy Double Bill: Who Here’s Lost? & Wife On Earth – The King’s Arms

There are many ways in which someone can try and make you laugh. We have gag tellers and slapstick prat fallers, satirists and surrealists who will all try and make us chortle. For this comedy double bill at the King’s Arms, as part of the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival, we were treated to some character comedy from Joanna Neary and a story from Ben Moor. First on was Joanna, who in Wife on Earth, was examining marriage through different characters. Taking us through this dissection of matrimony was Celia, a middle-class Joyce Grenfull-esque posh lady who was not unlike Celia Johnson in the film Brief Encounter. Writer Anna Reynolds drew on her own personal experience when she wrote about the fictional character Shirley Jones. The character is based upon the true story related to her by her fellow inmate that the teenage Reynolds met whilst she was in prison. The Writers Guild gave Reynolds the Best Play of 1992 Award, and at Buxton Fringe Festival 2019, the play was nominated for the Best Play Award and Sara Gray won the Award for Best Actress. Produced by Easy Company, the play is set in 1987 and begins with Sara Gray sitting in an easy chair, feet crossed ready to tell us a fairy tale, Rumpelstiltskin to be exact. Greater Manchester Fringe’s most iconic venue reopens this weekend

Iconic Salford pub The King’s Arms reopens its theatre in August with a series of themed live music Saturday Night Specials, after a massive refurbishment during lockdown. The Bim Williams Quintet kick off the Saturday Night Specials with jazz on Saturday 7th August; folk with Irish band Quare Craic play on Saturday 14th August; there will be a funk and soul DJ on Saturday 21st August and jazz again on Saturday 28th August with the George Grundy Quartet. The current red brick building opened in the 1870s, replacing an earlier King’s Arms pub built in 1807 on the opposite side of Bloom Street.
