The Royal – Liverpool’s Royal Court

Last night I was invited to review The Royal, and before you say, no I don’t mean the NHS hospital. It’s a show that is currently playing at The Royal Court Theatre. The show is a comedy starring Lindzi Germain a Royal Court regular and a true comedy Liverpool icon. Lindzi is also one of the show’s writers. Before the show opened, she came out with her dressing gown on and rollers in the hair to say hello and why she wrote the show. It all started after a trip to the Royal Hospital. She wasn’t the patient, but she was with her mum and dad, and it was her dad that did you should write a show about The Royal and so she did. From the get-go the laughter erupted within the theatre. There were times for people myself included had to gasp for breath before the next joke which all came thic...

The Scouse Sleeping Beauty – Liverpool’s Royal Court

Coming to the Royal Court Liverpool is always a delight and tonight I had the privilege of seeing ‘The Scouse Sleeping Beauty’ in all its glory. Liverpool’s Royal Court host their annual pantomime which emphasises ‘don’t bring the kids!’ as it loosely uses a panto storyline to create their usual crazy, amusing and fun night of adult entertainment. As I left the theatre tonight, there was no denying the extraordinary atmosphere of Christmas merriment and good humour and it was clear that this theatre company really know how to throw a party! We first meet Maleffluent (Lindzi Germain) and her trusty sidekick Crow (Andrew Schofield) who nastily cast a spell on baby Ora (Jamie Clarke). Ora’s father is the King of Poundland (Liam Tobin) and he promises to protect young Ora from any ‘pricks’ ...

Three Nights of Ground-breaking New Theatre

Following on from the success of their event at 81 Renshaw Street in July 2019, the Lantern Writers collective were all set to soar again last April until – well, we all know what happened next. But time flies, the world moves on, and so better late than never, they reconvene to deliver another three nights of ground-breaking new theatre at Liverpool’s Royal Court this November. The premise remains the same with twelve pieces of original writing delivered across three evenings with plays typically ranging in length from 15 minutes to half-an-hour, although this time round an hour-long piece opens the proceedings. Covering a wide variety of genres, audiences are guaranteed a diverse mix each night with comedy and drama intermingled to provide an entertaining showcase. One of the gr...

Homebaked the Musical – Liverpool’s Royal Court

The doors of Liverpool’s much loved Royal Court Theatre are back open and tonight we witness a new show “Homebaked the Musical” which has been produced by Liverpool’s Royal Court alongside Red Ladder Theatre Company. Written by Boff Whalley, ‘Homebaked the Musical’, is a new piece of theatre based on the well-known bakery that borders Anfield and Everton. It celebrates the historic and heroic story of the Liverpool residents who fought to save their local bakery from demolition and evolves into a huge inspiring project that brings the whole community together. Boff Whalley has done a fantastic job in writing something funny, heart-warming and emotive. The music is both touching and humorous which blends perfectly into the script. I particularly enjoyed the choral sound of ‘we rise’, ...
