Carlos Acosta’s Nutcracker in Havana with Acosta Danza at The Lowry is a dazzling spectacle that breathes vibrant life into a timeless classic. I was mesmerised from start to finish! This fast-paced production takes Tchaikovsky’s beloved ballet and adds the energy, colour, and rhythm of Havana, creating an experience that left me smiling from ear to ear.
From the very first scene, it was clear that this was a Nutcracker unlike any other. The staging was cleverly devised, blending traditional ballet with clever, modern touches that felt fresh and innovative. A standout moment came when a moving car drove onto the stage, seamlessly integrated into the storytelling. And the finale of the first half—a stunning deluge of artificial snow—was a breathtaking visual treat, earning audible gasps from the audience. This imaginative staging and effects made this production stand out like no other dance show I’ve seen.
Acosta Danza’s exceptional cast brought charisma, skill, and warmth to every role. Adria Diaz delivered a captivating performance as Clara, with youthful charm and elegance. Brandy Martinez shone as Fritz, balancing mischievous energy with precise, joyful dancing. Laura Rodriguez was radiant as the Sugar Plum Fairy, her technical brilliance matched by a graceful stage presence. Meanwhile, Denzel Francis delivered a commanding turn as King Rat, blending power and menace with mesmerizing movement.
What truly set this production apart was its vibrancy. The stage came alive with a kaleidoscope of colours, from dazzling costumes to striking backdrops and maypole ribbons flying from the ceiling that transported us straight to the heart of Havana. The music, too, was infused with a lively Latin twist, adding a unique flavour without compromising the essence of Tchaikovsky’s original score, I loved the Latin-esque Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy!
Carlos Acosta’s vision for this Nutcracker is a bold and joyful celebration of dance, culture, and creativity. With its dazzling visuals, inventive staging, and the incredible talent of Acosta Danza, this production is an absolute triumph. For anyone lucky enough to experience it, this Nutcracker in Havanais pure magic, a five-star masterpiece that has set a new benchmark for dance shows at the Lowry.
