Macbeth @ ZOO Southside

It isn’t really the done thing to start a review by simply quoting from the show’s blurb, but here it is – and why? Because The Barden Party absolutely delivers on what it promises: “A thrilling, saucy rendition of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, Macbeth… with a sassy, sexy bluegrass flair… transforming Macbeth into an unforgettable experience full of music, mischief and magic.” ( Read in full here: www.edfringe.com/tickets/whats-on/macbeth )

The Thane of Fife’s relationship with the throne of Scotland unfolds with all the glorious language, tension and moments of humour that makes “the Scottish play” so popular, augmented by song (something that previous centuries have also seen). Macbeth’s ambition is spurred along by her crown-focused husband and the Wyrd Brothers’ witchcraft – most protagonists are gender swapped – and the journey to ensuing devastation thrills, grips, entertains and satisfies.

Minimal but well chosen props and accessories fully support the multi-rolling of this very strong company, who work beautifully together to make sure each scene is richly created and each moment full of life and detail. The interwoven songs grab, shake, seduce and so work upon the emotions that they also ensure the audience is deeply immersed the whole time, and not only when directly – and often with comic flair – addressed.

The pace, especially of Shakespeare’s cut-down-for-Fringe text, ripped along. There was no danger that even someone new to Macbeth wouldn’t understand the plot, and the times where this speed did occasionally flatten the language were few and brief. The gender-swapped characters worked throughout the plot – as is usual for Shakespeare – with just the conceit of being taunted to be as daring “as a man” not easily fitting a world in which women wielded the most official power.

Direction, acting, script and design all showed a highly skilled and versatile approach. Above all, the source material was explored and played with brilliant imagination and deep understanding – a joy to experience!

To enumerate in detail the work of every company member of The Barden Party’s production is not possible within this review, but know that each merits praise, so: get along, watch, enjoy and receive a programme with the list of creatives for yourself.

Macbeth runs until 22nd August at ZOO Southside with tickets available at www.zoofestival.co.uk
