Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – Altrincham Garrick Playhouse

Go, go, Joseph! The Altrincham Garrick Playhouse has struck theatrical gold with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, delivering a dazzling production that proves this much-loved musical still has the power to bring generations together.

Directed by Joseph Meighan, this is a fabulous production bursting with colour, energy, humour and heart. From the opening number to the final curtain, there is something to delight everyone, making it the perfect family-friendly night out and a wonderful reminder of why this musical has remained such a firm favourite for decades.

Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Tim Rice, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat tells the biblical story of Joseph, his jealous brothers, his extraordinary coat and his journey from betrayal to triumph. Told through a wonderfully eclectic mix of musical styles, from country and western to calypso, rock ’n’ roll and French chanson, it is a story that continues to captivate audiences young and old.

The lighting, visuals and costumes were an absolute treat, transforming the stage into a vibrant technicolour world. Every scene brought something new to enjoy, with striking visual details and costumes that perfectly complemented the musical’s changing styles and larger-than-life characters. The production team deserves enormous credit for creating such a visual and auditory delight. Their attention to detail, combined with the energy of the cast, made the entire production feel immersive, polished and thoroughly professional.

The choreography by Louise Pettitt was equally impressive, with slick routines, beautifully coordinated dancers and brilliant timing. There was an elegance to the movement on stage, alongside the energy and precision needed to bring this much-loved score to life. It was a genuine pleasure to watch.

The live orchestra, under the musical direction of Andrew Saunders, with Simon Mercer-Murray as musical supervisor, provided a wonderful musical foundation. With so many familiar favourites, the score is central to the show’s appeal. However, the vocal repertoire is far from easy, making the casting of Joseph and the Narrator particularly important. Happily, Meighan has made two inspired choices.

As the Narrator, Penny Poulton was nothing short of exceptional. Making her debut with the company, Poulton immediately established herself as a performer to watch. With the most exquisite voice, remarkable vocal control and a commanding stage presence, she held the entire show together with effortless confidence. Her storytelling was warm and engaging, her delivery beautifully assured, and her vocals consistently outstanding. She was pitch-perfect, bringing clarity, character and a real sense of joy to every musical moment.

Poulton’s experience as a vocalist was evident throughout. Her résumé includes ten years performing in holiday parks and resorts in England and abroad, and that experience shone through in her confidence, versatility and ability to connect with the audience. The Narrator is the thread that binds the story together, and Poulton fulfilled that role brilliantly, guiding us through the action while making the part entirely her own. She was a pleasure to watch and, vocally, quite superb.

As Joseph, Ronan Pilkington was equally impressive. Having landed one of his dream roles with this production, he certainly made the most of the opportunity. His portrayal balanced vulnerability, humour and charisma, demonstrating both considerable talent and a natural connection with the audience. He carried the demands of the role with confidence and charm, making Joseph’s journey engaging from beginning to end.

The eleven brothers were cast perfectly, each contributing to the humour and lively family dynamics at the heart of the story. Ivor Farley, who has been associated with the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse for ten years, was a pleasure to watch as Jacob. Having enjoyed his performances in productions over the years, it was lovely to see him bring his familiar warmth and stage presence to the role.

Lewis Sewell also made his mark as Pharaoh, bringing humour, personality and excellent stage presence to the character. His performance added another entertaining dimension to a show full of musical variety and larger-than-life moments.

A special mention must go to the children’s ensemble. With two teams, Team Lloyd Webber and Team Rice, sharing the production, it was Team Lloyd Webber who took to the stage on opening night. These eleven extremely talented youngsters were a delight, bringing enthusiasm, confidence and infectious energy to their performances. A children’s ensemble always adds something special to Joseph, and this group certainly did not disappoint. Their contribution helped make the evening feel even more magical, and they should be immensely proud of their performances.

What stands out most is the sheer professionalism of the entire production. The choreography was sharp, the vocals impressive, the staging imaginative and the cast worked together beautifully. It is remarkable to think that these talented performers have lives and jobs beyond the theatre, given the quality of what they delivered on stage. The production is a real credit to everyone involved and demonstrates the outstanding standard that can be achieved by a dedicated amateur theatre company.

Ultimately, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is everything a family musical should be; colourful, uplifting, funny and packed with memorable music. Under Joseph Meighan’s direction, the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse has delivered a production full of heart, talent and theatrical magic. It is the sort of show that brings families together, gets audiences tapping their feet and sends everyone home with a smile.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab your tickets before they go, go, go! This technicolour treat is a fabulous celebration of live theatre at its very best, and one the whole family can enjoy.
