“I’m Johnny Cash” says a performer, and we believe him, with his soothing, authoritative voice and stage presence. The line-up also includes dead ringers for Patsy Kline, Kenny Rogers, and the one-and-only Dolly Parton. They aren’t the real superstars, of course, but they put on a hell of a show.
Songs include “Ring of Fire” (apparently inspired by a Wetherspoons curry), “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Jolene”, as well as the title song. The performers want us to join in, and gradually, the audience gains confidence and starts singing along. The front-of-house staff were bemused by the number of audience members who went up to the front of the stage, and they spent the second half of the show trying to get people to get people to go back to their seats. There was a party atmosphere in the packed theatre, with everyone enjoying themselves.
“Dolly” and “Patsy” sparkle in their costumes. “Dolly” teases us by appearing from time to time and joining in with the other performers, but her set is saved till later in the show, to the delight of the crowd. She has a powerful voice that shines during songs like “I will always love you”. The men are manly and “Kenny” treats us to a compelling performance of “The Gambler”. The backing band are superb too.
There is some fun humour. “Johnny” mispronounces Edinburgh throughout the first half of the show, then returns after the interval and says it correctly.
So grab your Stetson, put on your cowboy boots, and go along to a theatre near you for an entertaining night out. Whether you are a country music superfan, or just enjoy a party, you’ll have a great time.
