It’s powerful, heartfelt and bursting with unforgettable songs; Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with audiences – and the recent production on tour and currently at Buxton Opera House is no exception!
Directed by Bob Tomson and Bill Kenwright, this production retells Russell’s poignant tale of nature versus nurture through the lives of twins separated at birth. It’s a story filled with humour, warmth and inevitable heartbreak, delivered here with an emotional punch that keeps you gripped right to the final moments.
At the heart of the show is Vivienne Carlyle as Mrs Johnstone, whose moving portrayal of a mother torn between desperation and love carries both strength and vulnerability. Her vocals soar with passion, particularly during the iconic Marilyn Monroe motif, which becomes ever more heartbreaking as the story unfolds. Opposite her, Paula Tappenden as Mrs Lyons gives a commanding performance, portraying the character’s gradual unravelling with great nuance.
Sean Jones shines as Mickey, charting his character’s journey from cheeky schoolboy to troubled adult with humour, charm and devastating honesty. He is perfectly balanced by Joe Sleight as Eddie, whose endearing innocence makes the bond between the twins feel genuine and deeply affecting. Meanwhile, Kristofer Harding as the Narrator is both menacing and magnetic, his presence always reminding us of the looming tragedy.
The music, led by Jeremy Wootton and his outstanding live band, is a true highlight. Numbers such as Bright New Day lift the spirits with their energy and optimism, contrasting beautifully with the darker, more reflective songs that build to the show’s tragic climax. The live musicians bring an immediacy and vibrancy that gets every emotion on stage across.
