From Here to Eternity – Charing Cross Theatre

Set on a Hawaiian island, in 1941, in the two weeks prior to the Pearl Harbour attack, ‘From Here to Eternity’, is a new revival of Tim Rice's 2013 musical. With book by Bill Oakes and Donald Rice and based on the James Jones’ novel of the same name, is the first mainstream re-working of the musical since the original West End production which came under criticism for a book and narrative that was unnecessarily complex and drawn out, and that it lacked relevance at the time it was produced. It received mixed reviews, and closed in 2014, after a run of only six and a half months. This much smaller production, offered up by the usually brilliant Aria Entertainment production team, and making maximum use of the compact Charring Cross theatre, with a re-ordering of some of the musical numbe...

Alexandra Palace Festival of Fireworks

Billed as the “Glastonbury of Fireworks’, Alexandra Palace’s Festival of Fireworks was back with a BANG this year, to entertain a crowd of thousands, and celebrate Bonfire Night in true London style. In every way captivating, what is now a consistent part of the London Autumn events calendar did not disappoint this year. Set against unrivalled panoramic views over London, this is the hottest ticket in London on Bonfire night, and not just because of the size and ferocity of the bonfire itself! Before the mega fireworks display, general ticket holders were treated to a brilliant line up of live music and world food stalls of every possible description in the ‘StrEATlife village’, which was set up well with plenty of cover from the miserable rainy weather. For those who had purchased a...

My Neighbour Totoro – Barbican Theatre

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s (RSC) latest collaboration with Joe Hisaishi (Composer), Tom Morton-Smith (Adaptor), and Phelim McDermott (Director) who is best known for his work on the Philip Glass operas Akhnaten and Satyagraha, certainly has all the ingredients for that perfect production! The team have adapted one of the world’s most famous animated movies by animator master, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, to create something that is not only entirely fit for the stage, but in doing so have created an act of pure theatrical brilliance. Every minute of the production was magical and at times astonishingly beautiful.   For those who are unfamiliar with the 1980’s movie, ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ is set in 1950’s Japan, and features two young sisters, Satsuki (Ami Okumura Jon...

Fame Whore – King’s Head Theatre

‘Fame Whore’, written and directed by Tom Ratcliffe holds up a morality mirror (and light ring) to modern societies desperate desire for attention, relevance, and the ultimate goal, “followers”. It highlights the lengths that people will go to achieve fame, and the pitfalls for some once they achieve this, as well as the ever-evolving cancel (or call-out) culture that is growing within many online communities, that can leave some entirely ostracised from their friends and fans. Part one-man play, part cabaret and part social narrative, ‘Fame Whore’ introduces the world to Becky Biro (Gigi Zahir), a hard-working drag performer, with a modest social media following, but a wild desire to be the next Drag Factor contestant. Beck feels she “deserves” fame, and having been rejected from Drag ...

Only An Octave Apart – Wilton’s Music Hall

It might sound like an unlikely coupling, a world-famous opera singer and a cabaret legend described as the “the best cabaret artist of [their] generation", but Anthony Roth Costanzo and Justin Vivian Bond really do bring the magic to the stage in their two-person show ‘Only An Octave Apart’, which is currently playing at Wilton’s Music Hall. ‘Only An Octave Apart’ is a juxtaposition of styles in every way possible, vocally, stylistically, and creatively, the pair (with direction by Zack Winokur) have created a fluid and yet genuinely sincere 90-minute musical extravaganza that is truly charming, and that burrows deep to warm the soul. For those unfamiliar with the two performers, Bond, is a pioneer of alternative live performance, a true diva, a legend, with a smoky and inviting ton...

Noughts & Crosses – Richmond Theatre

‘Noughts & Crosses’, adapted for the stage by Sabrina Mahfouz for Pilot Theatre, is based on a series of young adult novels written by critically acclaimed British Author, Malorie Blackman. The series includes six novels and three novellas, all of which take place in an alternative 21st-century Britain, where the Crosses operate complete power over the Noughts, and where inequality and discrimination form the backbone of society, guiding the moral and constitutional compass. In Mahfouz’s adaptation, Sephy (Effie Ansah) is a Cross, she is dark-skinned and part of the elite class. Sephy’s people call the shots. Callum (James Arden) is a Nought, he is light-skinned and lower-class. He and his family are struggling to survive. The pair have been friends for an eternity, and whilst segre...

Queenz: The Show With Balls – The Clapham Grand

Following a very successful run at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, ‘Queenz: The Show With Balls’ has strutted into London at the Clapham Grand before heading out on a UK Tour. Advertised as a trailblazing, life affirming drag extravaganza, the production features a cast of five phenomenally gifted, and sequin-clad divas who make up the ultimate ‘drag queen super girl group’. The five are fierce, and they clearly mean business, performing a jam-packed list of hits and the full spectrum of pop classics from across the decades, including The Spice Girls, Lady Gaga, Little Mix, Marilyn Monroe, Beyonce, and Shakira, as well as their own original remixes of show tunes and diva anthems arranged by Alex Turney (Musical Supervisor & Arrangements). The show offers up drag on a big scal...

Horse-Play – Riverside Studios

“Set in a dark sex dungeon, crime-busting superhero, the Stallion, and his intrepid sidekick, Butterfly, have been lured to the secret lair of their arch-nemesis: the dastardly Villainor…!” This all sounds very exciting and Hollywood-style cinematic, but in reality, this is not a play about superheroes at all, it is instead an incredibly camp, modern, and queer take on the traditional British farce, conceived and written by Ian Hallard. The play features two main characters Tim (David Ames) and Tom (Jake Maskall), a married couple of 10 years, seeking to spice up their sex life with a bit of superhero, spandex cosplay. It features a very handsome male sex worker and a room full of sex toys. Sounds like the perfect night out for our adventure seeking couple, however, when an unfortuna...

Yellowman – Orange Tree Theatre

Written by Dael Orlandersmith, this beautifully written two-hander is a masterpiece in storytelling of epic proportions. Whilst incredibly simple in design, the work is also superbly complex and intricate in nature, as Orlandersmith has interwoven duologue, storytelling, and testimony to narrate, in a poetic style, the intricacies of love, hate, bigotry, loss and difference that has haunted the African-American communities for hundreds of years. ‘Yellowman’ tells the story of two childhood friends. Alma and Eugene have grown up together. Alma, a dark-skinned African American girl, with a gin-sodden mother and dreams of a life beyond the confines of their small town. Eugene is lighter skinned, mixed heritage, educated and from a wealthier background. The story is one of raw contrasts, an...

Rehab The Musical – Playground Theatre

Inspired by the personal experiences of writers Grant Black and Murray Lachlan Young, ‘Rehab The Musical’ is a brutally open and honest, dark comedy window into the world of addiction, the journey of recovery, and the bravery of the many different characters who check themselves into rehab. Set in 1999, at the dawning of a new millennium, this new musical tells the story of young protagonist Kid Pop (Jonny Labey), a child star and manufactured pop artist, who as they often do, gets caught up in a hedonistic world of alcohol, drugs and parting, and ends up on the front pages of the tabloid press in a compromising situation. Up in court on drugs charges, Kid Pop is sentenced to 60 days in rehab, a punishment which, for Kid Pop anyway, is seen as a walk in the park. However, as articulated...
