In Clay – VAULT Festival

This is the first show I have seen at the 2023 VAULT festival and what a start. In Clay is one of the best new musicals I have seen, full of heart and passion, it was an experience I won’t soon forget.

In Clay is a one-woman musical based on the life of Marie-Berthe Cazin, a French artist. The story is set in her home in the suburbs of Paris in the 1930s. When we meet her in this story, Marie is awaiting the arrival of her fellow artist friend Henrietta. As she waits, she starts to tell the story of how they met in school and as a result the story of her life thus far. She is reflecting on her journey and career, thinking about what could have been and how she ended up on her current path.

Rosalind Ford is very charming as Marie. Her comedic timing bundled with her ability to convey some unexpected downcast moments, was amazing. Ford managed to portray multiple characters when telling the story in a way that was not awkward or stilted, she was absolutely brilliant.

Her storytelling was elevated by the music and lyrics, written by Jack Miles and Rebecca Simmonds. The jazz manouche style combined with the contemporary music theatre style worked really well, as they tell stories of the different periods of Marie’s life. Ford’s voice was beautiful, and her scatting was unexpected yet delightful. Particularly, the songs in which Marie is discovering her passion for pottery and one in which she is conversing with her husband via letters were highlights.

The venue and staging were perfect because the small theatre gave the show an intimate vibe. This allowed the audience to further connect with Maire. The set design by Sorcha Corcoran made the stage feel like the audience were in Marie’s kitchen. There was a beautiful selection of pottery around the stage, with each piece having some meaning.

This show is about a reflection of life and the joy and pain found in life and art. I’d advise you to experience it for yourself.

In Clay is playing at VAULT Festival until the 28th January, you can book tickets here: https://vaultfestival.com/
