Well-bred socialite Tracy Lord (Helen George) is about to marry oddball accountant George Kittredge (David Seadon-Young), much to the dismay of her upper-crust family. Journalists Mike (Freddie Fox), and Liz (Carly Mercedes Dyer) infiltrate the glitzy wedding, hoping to get a lucrative scoop for their tabloid. Meanwhile, Tracy’s rehabilitated ex-husband Dexter (James Hume) has his own agenda. It’s never a good sign when the characters hold a big party the night before the wedding.
Cole Porter’s music and lyrics are timeless, accompanied by a live jazz band. I loved Who Wants to be a Millionaire, sung by Fox and Dyer as the astonished journos explore the mansion and discover how the other half live. As the rowdy party gets underway, the full company performance of Let’s Misbehave captures the decadence of the idle rich. And Hume’s captivating rendition of You Do Something to Me reveals Dexter’s feelings for Tracy.
How rich are the Lord family exactly? The set, by Tom Rogers, breathes old Hollywood and old money, with a lavish double staircase, down which the aristocratic characters glide, topped by an ornate balcony. There’s an endless succession of garden furniture, as the characters lounge in different areas of the mansion grounds. And the lighting, designed by Howard Hudson, gives an idyllic sense of space, openness, and endless summer.
The ice cream-coloured 1950s fit-and-flare dresses worn by the ensemble are perfect for twirling, with a glimpse of frilly petticoat as the skirts lift. Tracy has a fabulous wardrobe, with diamond jewellery for every occasion, and even the servants are immaculately dressed. I can’t help wondering if we are missing out, in our modern era of casual attire.
Everyone was on top form, with the musical numbers and the humour standing out. Beautifully realised by director Rachel Kavanagh, the whole show was a real treat, with delightful detail and richness in every moment.
