Scotland’s very own drag superstar, Mary Mac, makes her debut at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. Blending gentle comedy and song, this is a fun hour with a home-grown talent.
Born and raised in Glasgow, Mary Mac takes her drag name from her mother. Originally trained as a musical theatre performer, she has now been doing drag for the past 16yrs, and her experience shows in her stage presence and confidence. She normally spends a lot of her time on cruise ships and peppers the evening with stories of life on board. Her CV is impressive – taking on roles in La Cage Aux Follies and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, as well as supporting Bianca Del Rio and appearing in panto.
This musical theatre experience is evident in her vocal talents. There’s a very funny Cher impression, but cleverly used to sing an Abba song, and a comedy version of Susan Boyle singing the iconic “I Dreamed a Dream” from Britain’s Got Talent. The musical interludes are more successful than the comedy overall. On the night of the review there was a small but perfectly formed crowd, and Mary did well to interact with them and get everyone on side quickly. She is an immensely likeable character, lacking the acerbic wit of many drag queens. There is a sense that the show is aimed towards an older cruise ship crowd more than a younger pub audience, especially when she explains the phrase “dominant top” as if she is trying to avoid embarrassing her granny. There are also a few tired cliches, such as a joke about lesbians in Birkenstocks, which feel less original.
However, any flatter moments are lifted during the songs, particularly the Mary Mac medley at the end of the show. Set to the tune of “Maniac” from Flashdance, she works her way through a variety of famous dance routines, all whilst wearing impossibly high stiletto heels. Accompanist Ricardo deserves a mention as well, ably assisting with the musical direction.
This is a drag show where you can sit in the front row without fear, and an enjoyable end to an evening at the Fringe.
