The fringe is all about embracing all kinds of art from physical theatre, to spoken word, from historical talks to wrestling…. yup this is a wrestling show but with a twist.
Mythos Ragnarok has become a stable of the fringe since it started its journey 5 years ago, and it’s not hard to see why. Being the first of its kind (that we know of), it mixes wrestling, Norse Mythology and storytelling incredibly well. Is all the mythology told in its most correct form? Not quite, but time constraints and the power of theatre allow for a little customization, not to mention the stories were made up to begin with.
This show is really a labour of love that has paid off: homemade costumes, an ever adapting and improving script and some excellent performers make up one hell of an entertaining show. The lighting design accompanied by a fantastic playlist of Norse god inspired music manages to successfully engross its audience into the shows setting despite the fact that the show is set in such a big and beautifully lavish room. My only jibe would be that they should probably calm down with the smoke machine.
Ed Gamester is incredibly entertaining in the role of Loki, quickly making the trickster an audience favourite, his charisma and wonderful comedic timing make him hard not to watch. His counter lead Howard Drake, gives us the stone cold, fighting machine that is Odin, with some admirable fight sequences and a presence that makes him easy to distrust from the very beginning. Louise Young took the audience by storm as Gullveig, showing immense strength and some fantastic acting, but the audience’s clear favourite of the night had to be Miles Ley in the Role of Thor: bringing some ridiculous comedy to the piece as the big, dumb god of lightning.
You will struggle to find a show quite like this one, and you can feel the passion and love that’s gone into it. They’ve not only managed to tell a full story throughout the show, but they’ve done it so well, that you’re in for quite the emotional rollercoaster. Go see Mythos: Ragnarök if you can, you don’t have to be a wresting fan to enjoy this one, it’s funny, clever and one hell of a show.
Mythos: Ragnarök plays at The Assembly rooms from the 6th – 29th (excluding 12th,24th,28th) at 21:25 (1hr 20 minutes) although due to venue space please allow time for the show to overrun or start late.
