Priscilla Queen of the Desert – Palace Theatre

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert first frolicked onto the big screen back in 1994, bringing a queer tale of friendship, drag and disco to audiences around the world. With a sequel on the way, what better time to board the lavender bus and relive this musical road trip all over again?

Sydney-based drag queen Tick/Mitzi (Kevin Clifton) agrees to perform at his estranged wife’s resort on the other side of the country. Recruiting fellow performers Bernadette (Adele Anderson) and Felicia (Nick Hayes), the trio take a journey through the Outback, stumbling upon a host of beguiling folk along the way.

The three leads typify the queens and their distinctive personalities: Clifton offers a level-headed yet anxious Mitzi, Anderson charms while calling the shots as Bernadette, and Hayes channels the devil-may-care energy any good Felicia is known for. Also hitching a ride, mechanic Bob is warmly played by Peter Duncan, a band of Divas supply desert-defying vocals and the tireless ensemble pep up every number.

Priscilla is all about what’s in the dresser; while the outfits might not be winning Best Costume Design this time around (the wardrobe feels less ambitious to previous productions, particularly in the floor show) there’s still a vibrant selection of frocks that serve as a feast for the eyes.

The score of pop and disco classics offers more mashups and medleys than you can shake a didgeridoo at, performances of Go West and Colour My World being particular highlights.

Meanwhile, Andrew Exeter’s set combines measured props and screens projecting the passing wilderness to keep everything moving smoothly. Priscilla herself is a true to form, rough-hewn beauty.

A beautiful blend of funny and feel-good makes Priscilla the Queen of jukebox musicals.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical continues at Palace Theatre, Manchester until 28th February with tickets available from https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/priscilla-queen-of-the-desert-the-musical/palace-theatre-manchester/
