Last night I was able to review the sell-out show of Whitney – Queen of the Night at the New Brighton Pavilion. A show that has been seen in the west end and is currently touring the UK.
This tribute show had all the back catalogue of hits but the late and iconic Whitney Houston, whilst also telling stories of her life for example she was the first black singer to appear on the cover of 17 in the 1980s. It certainly enjoyed not only the flawless vocals but hearing more about Whitney’s life.
The show was a simple set up of 3 backing singers with a live band consisting of drums, guitar, piano and saxophone. I must apologise in advance, but I am unable to name the participants in the show due to not been given a programme or it due to being not listed on the webpages. However, it was an amazing show. If I was to close my eyes, it was like I was listening to the real icon herself. The show was made to make you as an audience member feel involved. When they asked us to tell those persons either side of our allocated seat, they love them. Having sat on an aisle seat the usher got my wishes of love.
I have very few criticisms of the show per say other than that I don’t think the venue was a good choice. Yes, it sold out, but some patrons wanted to get up and dance after all that’s what most of Whitney’s songs do they make you want to dance. So, audience’s members then proceeded to dance in the aisle. I think the backing singers could have been louder, but these comments are very nit-picky. The song ‘I Will Always Love You’ from the film The Bodyguard was a treat to hear but was surprisingly not the finale song it was sung much earlier.
There was a lot to love about this show. The lights, incredible high notes with riffs, slick musical playing and dazzling costumes. I do hope that this show comes back because it seems that it will sell out again and again to relieve music for the tour de force icon that is Whitney Houston. If you see this show advertised in your area, then I would definitely book before it sells out because it will sell out. https://www.queenofthenight.co/
