Brothers Broke’s clever show was simple and sweet. Starring two men, two guitars and one harmonica, this show presents the infamous connection between Bob Dylan and John Lennon through short sections of commentary and adapted songs. Whilst the story behind Dylan and Lennon’s affiliation was nothing ground-breaking, it was interesting to hear the brother’s interpretation of comments made by the musicians. Their dissection of lyrics and themes within chosen songs helped to turn a few comments made by two musicians into an engaging story of rivalry and respect.
The version of Like a Rolling Song into Dig It was an obvious choice for a mash-up. It began with the classic Dylan track and flowed naturally into the opening lyrics “Like a rolling stone; like a rolling stone; like a rolling stone” of Dig It. There were other more subtle connections made such as the overlap between socio-political voice within each songwriter’s work. Also, the influence of Dylan’s surreal lyrics on Lennon’s songwriting was exemplified in closing number I Am the Walrus. The most technically impressive number was “Masters of War” by Dylan which contained and strikingly in-sync crescendo on the acoustic and bass guitar and emotive singing from both brothers. The satirical addition of the harmonica into The Beatles Norwegian Wood was among one of many witty acts of the night.
Unfortunately, the venue let this otherwise entertaining show down. The sold-out performance felt overcrowded, and it was hard to see the stage due to lack of tiering in the seating. I was on the edge of my seat throughout but for the wrong reasons.
