Tonight was my first time at Winstanley College and my first time seeing a production by Orrell Musical & Dramatic Society (OMADS). The company was set up in 1967.
I have seen the Westend production of We Will Rock You but working it out it must be 20 years ago.
We Will Rock You is a jukebox musical Featuring over 20 hit songs by the British rock band Queen formed in the 70s. Story and script by Ben Elton a comedian and writer. Set in a post-apocalyptic future it tells the tale of a world where music and individuality is banned.
At the core of the story, the principal cast, Emily Reacher as Scaramouche and Jerome Antony Pargetor as Galileo. Pargetor was the epitome of a triple threat musical theatre performer, his dancing was strong, the vocals flawless.
As a pair these too were very connected, had a good rapport and sang well together, they bantered like a married couple, with some great comedic moments.
Becky Brown as Killer Queen was a true professional, powerful vocals and a confident presence.
The music was performed live by an onstage visible band, including two keyboards and electric guitar, a bass guitar and drums.
It was the opening night so some of the sound gremlins may have been teething issues, however it was at times unfortunately quite distracting from the performance. If I was to be picky, the vocals were missing the effects through the mixer throughout the evening, and they were having to push harder than needed.
The music is obviously contagious, everybody knows and loves the songs, they’re so catchy and well written. The cast seemed to be having great fun and the ensemble costuming had good attention to detail.
The performance began at 7:30pm through till 8:45pm, a short interval and restarted at 9:05pm, finishing at 10:05pm.
