As calls for another general election loom and the Labour Party conference ongoing only a few miles away, this show couldn’t have come at a better time. A quirky, fresh and gutsy performance that can be followed by all, it is the story of how the pop Prime Minister rose and fall.
Harry Hill and Steve Brown have concocted a truly original piece, one that spans decades and international conflict, but has been overseen by the keen eye of Peter Rowe so that the farcical can shine and the ‘piss-take’ attitude can successfully overshadow the turbulent geo-political events at the mercy of New Labour at the beginning of the millennium.
Stand out aspects of the performance included the live music. Mr Brown’s lyrics and score are equally funny and intelligent. From a singing princess Di to a duet between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden, which may have been difficult for some to clap-along to, the jazzy-rock music was a key part to the success of this production. Though the content is a sickly reminder of global tension the actor’s charm and the catchy melody were enough for me to appreciate this tangy musical.
Debbie O’Brien casting did a fantastic job. Each actor brought their own flair to the stage and the talent was palpable. All multi-rolled characters, the different accents, the harmonies were powerful and present. Everybody on stage performed like they were doing something they weren’t supposed to, which is exactly the edge required when making fun of such recent events.
I would recommend TONY! to anyone interested. It is informative as well as a good laugh and could be a perfect stencil for other well-known controversial figures or those yet to come. Nowadays, farce can be seen as a lesser theatre and this production is a great reason to disagree.
If you remember when Anthony Charles Lynton Blair (now Sir) was in No 10 or not, this show is a must watch. The rock opera is a perfect genre for how the pop Prime Minister changed the landscape of British politics.
