A story of a struggling theatre writer and the sacrifices he makes to make his dream come true, Tick, Tick…Boom is a show full of fun and thought-provoking songs. An autobiographical piece on the life of Jonathan Larson: most famously known for the hit musical Rent.
Whilst a successful movie, and perhaps with a creative set and direction a strong musical, unfortunately Midnight Sun Theatre’s production misses its mark. Set in a small black box theatre with a tv screen to show locations and several black stage boxes and stools which seem to be aimlessly moved around the space the entire show, the direction and vision for the show seems amiss. Songs are not directed in a particularly interesting or dynamic manner the performance seemed to lack any kind of atmosphere at all, with very few jokes landing.
Our cast in undoubtedly talented but perhaps a little miscast, struggling to blend voices and hit some of the rockier notes.
Joel Camins clearly has a huge respect for his role of Jonathan, impressively never leaving the stage and belting out some strong numbers, however, isn’t always the most convincing in the role of the 29-year-old musical writer, lacking chemistry with his female romantic leads.
Jeremy Sivitz has excellent characterization and is very entertaining to watch, taking on multiple strong character roles.
Shaylyn Goard is a stand out throughout the performance, with a phenomenal singing voice and some brilliant character acting. She is definitely one to watch.
Overall, the musical itself is easy to follow, the songs are fun and it’s a very relatable piece, and this production does show potential, however a new directorial approach may be worthwhile to get the most that they can from the content provided. Where jokes were clearly embedded the energy needed to carry them fell short. The cast are talented though and if you are a fan of the musical as is, it’s still worth the trip.
