The Wizard of Oz – Altrincham Garrick Playhouse

Altrincham Garrick’s latest production of The Wizard of Oz is a tour de force! I can say with confidence that it’s one of the most impressive productions I’ve seen in recent months. Running until Sunday, November 3rd, this show has been brought to life under the talented direction of Joseph Meighan. The level of detail in every aspect of this production is remarkable, from the lavish costumes to the dynamic set design and breathtaking special effects that fully immerse the audience in Oz’s magical world; including digital projection, lighting and pyro!

The cast delivered a polished, professional performance that rivalled any big-touring production. Ciara-Alexandra Booker shone as Dorothy, bringing warmth, innocence, and undeniable talent to the role. Her voice was powerful and filled with emotion, beautifully conveying Dorothy’s journey. Ben Robinson brought a delightful twist by playing the puppet Toto, adding a layer of charm and humour to each scene they shared. Ronan Pilkington’s as the Scarecrow was lively and endearing, and his physicality and comedic timing were spot-on. Connor J Ryan as the Tinman gave a heartfelt performance, while Matt Spilsbury was hilarious and heartwarming as the Cowardly Lion while being larger than life in every scene delighting the audience. Charlie Tomlinson brought a sense of grandeur and gravitas to the Wizard, alongside an incredibly talented cast. Special mention must go to the entire Ensemble and Children’s Ensemble who looked to be having a fantastic time on stage too!

Having seen the West End version of Oz at the Palladium recently, I was astounded by the quality and finesse of this production. It was just as slick, just as polished, and, dare I say, even more fun! The Altrincham Garrick Playhouse continues to deliver outstanding productions and I feel so lucky to have this theatre on our doorstep.

The use of a full live band, housed in their adjacent studio theatre, added depth to the musical experience and showcased the immense talent behind the scenes as well as on stage.

This really is a must-see production that delivers everything you want from a great family trip to the theatre, it’s testament to the magic that can happen when a talented cast and dedicated crew come together. I would highly recommend seeing this show.

Verdict: Outstanding! You’ll be swept off to Oz in the best possible way!
