This fun, playful interactive show was the perfect way to spread festive cheer. Our 3 clowns Boz, Yolo and Flo were warm and friendly characters from the start and had a natural way with interacting with the audience and getting them involved. They set the tone of each scene so well. Whether it be being mischievous and slapping one another with fish toy props or creating a sense of awe with the use of shadows and projections. They brought each of the puppets to life too. Harrison the puppet was beyond adorable and felt so real as he made his way across the snowy wilderness and travelled across sea, land and air. I was mesmerised each time the puppets took over the stage. Paul, Gemma and Katy-Anne really were fantastic with sharing their creativity and showcasing what Goofus Theatre are about. It was apparent that play and joyful moments were their focus and succeeded not only with adults and children interacting but laughing out loud also.
An intimate performance space that has been designed with young people in mind. The show reflected this also by using a smoke machine and slow swirling lights to transform the modern theatre space. The kids in the audience were audibly wowing at the space before it even began. The use of music throughout set a nice calming tone and playfulness when necessary. The performance itself was non-verbal, but the use of sound effects brought the energy when needed. A white background set with draped fabric and tippee tent meant that they were able to use both projections to show waves for the sea bit and use torches to create shadows and add depth for the use of projections.
Accessibility had been well considered from a handy guide upon arrival in the lobby. Stating what to expect from the show, the actors, the premise and fidgy toys and ear defenders for those who would benefit from using them. Some red noses and cotton snow balls as well to touch and interact with which was a nice touch.
Nina Hajiyianni, Artistic Director of Theatre Porto has clearly thought about a young audience and accessibility. There is a side room which shows a live stream of the performance should anyone wish to leave the space and watch this way in a quieter setting.
The show lasts for 1 hour, the perfect length to keep a young audience’s attention. Although it seemed the children didn’t want to leave! The performers took a bow, earning a big clap and cheer and the children in the audience continued to play with the bubble machine and snowballs. It was so nice to see children enjoy the theatre and continuing to play once it had finished.
If you want to watch an engaging and magical show this December, this is the show for you. Big kids welcome.
