This world-class ballet company, the State Ballet of Georgia comes to London for the first time in its 175-year history, presenting a full-length classic production of the renowned Swan Lake. With each performance accompanied by the English National Opera Orchestra, this production is sure to captivate the hearts of those who have the pleasure to experience it.
The classic tale of Swan Lake is the love story of Prince Siegfried (Oleg Ligai) and the Swan Queen, Odette (Nino Samadashvili). Prince Siegfried is taken on quite the journey when he embarks on a hunting trip and encounters a flock of swans, inescapably falling deeply in love with Odette. However, unbeknownst to Prince Siegfried, Odette is under an evil curse which was cast by the evil magician Rothbart which only allows Odette to take human form between midnight and daybreak, putting their love to the test.
The audience are treated to hearing the beautiful English National Opera Orchestra play prior to any action on stage taking place. It is a truly captivating to experience the incredible sound in all its glory before we are startled into the production with a change of pace, tempo and volume.
The set and scenery throughout this production is quite charming. While the set does not need to be elaborate, it complements the dancers and the story well, with the arches and wings expertly dressed to create the mystical feel of the tale and keep the audience fully engaged. The costumery and design correlates perfectly with the backdrop of the scenes, each dancer shining radiantly in their attire including well thought out and complimentary head pieces and accessories.
It is indisputable that this company is tremendously talented but there are some moments such as the pas de deux work which is particularly impressive. The communication and precision between partners are exceptional, not to mention the two principal dancers and the first time they dance together which is quite beautiful. Their almost competition like sequence where Odile executes countless fouetté turns is a strong highlight.
When the iconic Swan Theme is orchestrated, the magic is palpable. Rothbart’s opening solo to the theme is strong and enticing and sets the tone for the audience’s immersion further into the story. The sequences where the swans all came together were expertly choreographed and made for some amazing patterns on the floor. Paired with mood lighting and a moonlit backdrop, their sequences make for a particularly stunning watch. Other choreography that is particularly memorable is where the three big swans and four little swans take to the stage and the character work and flamenco dancing at the beginning of Act 2 which gives great contrast to the rest of the production.
This production of Swan Lake is incredibly captivating and romantic and will transport audience members for one evening to another world. With charming and moving choreography, this performance will leave you mesmerised and fully fulfilled.
