The Mousetrap directed by the talented duo of Ian Talbot and Denise Silvey, is an absolute delight for any ‘whodunit’ fan!
The production currently touring the UK boasts an outstanding cast, with Rachel Dawson as Mollie Ralston, Michael Lyle as Giles Ralston, Todd Carty as Major Metcalf, Shaun McCourt as Christopher Wren, Catherine Shipton as Mrs Boyle, Leigh Lothian as Miss Casewell, Steven Elliott as Mr Paravicini and Garyn Williams as Detective Trotter. Together, they bring Agatha Christie’s iconic murder mystery to life in a way that captivates and entertains from start to finish.
First and foremost, it’s currently at Buxton Opera House until Saturday 23rd September and the theatre serves as the perfect venue for this classic ‘whodunit’. Celebrating its 120th anniversary this year, the opera House’s rich history and timeless charm add an extra layer of authenticity to the play’s vintage setting. The beautiful surroundings and friendly front of house staff enhance the experience of a real great night out at the theatre!
The production keeps you hooked throughout; Rachel Dawson’s portrayal of Mollie Ralston is commendable. She captures the character’s vulnerability and growing unease with finesse, keeping the audience guessing throughout. Michael Lyle as Giles Ralston provides a solid counterpart, his chemistry with Dawson creating palpable tension.
Todd Carty (Eastenders, The Bill) brings a dose of humour to the production as Major Metcalf. His comedic timing is spot-on, providing much-needed levity amidst the suspense. Garyn Williams, playing the enigmatic Detective Trotter, is the linchpin of the show. His performance is both charismatic and mysterious, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats as he unravels the truth behind the murder.
The direction by Ian Talbot and Denise Silvey is masterful. They maintain the play’s signature suspense while allowing the characters’ relationships to shine through. The set design is just as you’d want it to be for a Murder mystery, transporting the audience to the isolated guesthouse where the murder occurs with period furniture and oak framed walls.
As the plot thickens and secrets are revealed, The Mousetrap keeps you guessing until the very end. It’s a testament to Agatha Christie’s storytelling prowess and the exceptional talent on display at Buxton Opera House, this play is as good now as it was when it first played theatres 70 years ago.
