Leaving behind them a trail of raving reviews as they travel around the country, it is no surprise that Long Lane Theatre keeps impressing.
The story is simple enough, but it is brought to us in a way that is both remarkably efficient, funny and educational.
Though it is set in the 1800s, something that may put theatregoers off, may they be assured that this production feels as present as the day itself.
Each performance has tenacity, complexity and human value and will keep audiences, whether they’re football fans or not, entertained throughout.
The studio at Liverpool Royal Court is not a massive space, and noticing the compact nature of The Giant Killers set, neither were any of the touring show’s previous venues.
It is testament to the quality of the cast of four performers that they kept us in their world in such an intimate setting. There is little room for error. Whilst at times moments felt over rehearsed overall, this is a show that deserves a larger stage and bigger audiences.
It is jam-packed with character, northern heart and some (at times slippy) northern accents.
The relationship between Lucy (Eve Pearson-Smith) and Bobby (Andrew Pearson-Smith) feels natural and right, which might be aided by their marital status out of the theatre. Graham Butler as Billy brings the energy to the set and keeps the play alive in physical moments that may have otherwise felt amateur
Lastly, Nicholas Shaw gives Mr Ashton a likeable stuffiness and certain poise to the stage. These actors work incredibly well together and have created a tight-knit production that will entertain and educate crowds for a long time to come.
Well-timed with the Euro men’s final in Germany against Spain, it shows the value of football and friendship throughout England and the UK and what the sport means to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Long Lane Theatre continues their tour of the The Giant Killers until 2nd August.
They are performing at Liverpool Royal Court until 13th July and their next venue is East Riding Theatre in Beverly where the show will run on 16th and 17th July.
