Galloping into Liverpool’s Royal Court throughout August is Take Me Home County Road, the story of Shelly, a County Road local with a remarkable singing talent. Once performing on cruise ships Shelly’s world now looks very different. Having swapped the spotlight for a role as a classroom teaching assistant, she still dreams of singing success. When the opportunity arises to enter The Next Big Thing, she embarks on a journey fuelled by friendship, determination and community spirit. What happens next? You’ll have to grab a ticket (and perhaps a pair of cowboy boots) to find out.
Adam McCoy showcases his talents both on and off the stage, appearing as neighbour Anthony while also making his playwriting debut with this production. The fact that this is McCoy’s first play demonstrates an impressive understanding of exactly what Liverpool’s Royal Court audiences are looking for. Packed with Scouse humour and accompanied by country classics including Stand By Your Man and Man! I Feel Like a Woman!, the script balances comedy, heart and music with ease. McCoy’s writing seamlessly moves from scene to song, allowing the story to flow naturally while keeping the audience engaged throughout.
At its heart, the show explores themes of family, friendship, relationships and the challenges of everyday life. These universal themes make the story relatable regardless of age or background. Predominantly set in the heart of the home – the kitchen – the production creates an immediate sense of familiarity. The characters feel authentic, quirky and recognisable, making it easy for audiences to invest in their stories. Having been fortunate enough to see several productions at the Royal Court, what particularly stood out in this one was the exceptional vocal strength across the entire cast, proving once again that the North is where it’s at.
With a cast of just five performers, each deserves individual recognition. Helen Carter shines in the leading role of Shelly, delivering effortless vocals while bringing vulnerability, warmth and authenticity to the character. Eithne Browne, as Shelly’s mum Joan, draws upon her wealth of Royal Court experience to create a character filled with recognisable nuances and heartfelt humour.
Adam McCoy brings Anthony, Shelly’s next-door neighbour, to life with camp humour, strong chemistry with his fellow cast members and, of course, a cracking pair of legs in heels. Lenny Wood gives a grounded and engaging performance as Shelly’s husband Mick, portraying the character’s journey with sensitivity and believable development throughout the show.
However, the performer who had me laughing all the way back down County Road was Keddy Sutton as Margy. Sutton brings a wonderfully natural comedic energy to the role, leaving the audience howling with laughter. Her understanding of timing, physical comedy and delivery is exceptional, and you can’t help but admire the bold choices she makes throughout the performance. Together, the five cast members create a company that is both memorable and immensely likeable.
Set and Costume Designer Alfie Heywood makes the bold decision to centre much of the action around a realistic kitchen set, and it works brilliantly. The design captures the warmth and familiarity of the show’s setting, while the integration of modern technology enhances the storytelling and keeps the production visually engaging.
I was accompanied to the theatre this evening by someone who wouldn’t consider themselves a regular theatre-goer, and I think that says a lot about the show’s broad appeal. When every joke lands and the audience’s toes are tapping throughout, you’re clearly doing something right. We both agreed this is a production not to be missed – particularly if you’re interested in hearing the older generation discuss “dogging” on Everton Brow.
Take Me Home County Road is packed with warmth, humour and powerhouse vocals. Combining Scouse wit with country classics, it delivers exactly the kind of feel-good entertainment that Liverpool’s Royal Court does best.
