Amplifi is a series of gigs showcasing the best in modern Scottish music, held every few months in the quirky bar space venue of The Queens Hall, Edinburgh. Performed mid-week I was somewhat surprised to find such a large diverse and enthusiastic audience, ready to heartily support the three acts on display tonight. Presented by Arusha Qureshi in association with Halina Rifai and supported by Creative Scotland and The City of Edinburgh Council, and We Are Here Scotland this is a really nice initiative to support the fringe musicians and minorities looking for a stage and platform to showcase development. Jasdeep Singh Degun and the Scottish Ensemble – The Queens Hall, Edinburgh

At The Queens Hall tonight Jasdeep Singh Degun sits cross-legged smiling and calm, cradling his sitar, on a raised Dias in the middle of the stage, and at his shoulder equally laid-back, Harkiret Singh Bahra, his regular accompanist on the Tabla, a pair of hand drums from the Indian subcontinent. In a semi-circle around the pair the Scottish Ensemble quintet are assembled, the violins of Jonathan Morton and Donald Grant, the viola of Jane Atkins, Naomi Pavri on Cello and Diane Clark on Double Bass. The striking difference is that Degun and Bahra do not have iPads in front of them streaming the music. Julia Bullock & Bretton Brown – The Queens Hall

Julia Bullock is an American Soprano, from Missouri, the New York Times have described as, ‘An impressive, fast-rising soprano…poised for a significant career’. This was a real concert of two halves, the first section being more classical and almost funereal in places, and the second  after the interval, being much more lyrical and almost playful, albeit with a serious message. And perhaps pointing towards the dual personality of Bullock herself; extremely serious about her music, with many years of Classical training, on the one hand but clearly also very passionately involved with the plight of sisterhood and Black America.
