Temi Wilkey: Lover Girl – Soho Theatre

Appearing on stage in front of a draped red curtain, Temi Wilkey’sLover Girl is tantalisingly cheeky from the outset. She tells us she’s single and unlucky in love, but she’s hoping this show can change that; confident audience flirtation follows. We’re soon introduced to the concept of her ‘Infinity Pussy’, a physical embodiment of her queerness and sexual freedom. The show starts as a typical stand-up routine in which Wilkey laments the perils of dating (believe it or not, women are somehow worse than men), but it soon becomes something much more absurd and theatrical. Ushered in by some hilariously grotesque suction sounds and Wilkey bundling herself in a red tulle cape, the Infinity Pussy comes to life and takes over the narrative. Temi Wilkey (Lover Girl) – Pleasance Courtyard (Upstairs)

Well… the fact our Lover Girl has Daddy issues explains a bit. She also has Mummy issues, which explains a whole lot more. That’s w-h-o-l-e, with a ‘w’. Having caught something on a poster or flyer predicting ‘low-brow content with high-brow delivery’, no-one will be disappointed with this show. But this wasn’t low brow; it was just open, honest, brave… and funny. And due to the ‘high-brow delivery’ even the double entendres elicited a healthy reaction where usually there would have been only groans. As the hour progresses it turns out this was just the aperitif to some more thought-provoking passages. Temi is single and perplexed. She’s an excellent singer and dancer, taking the audience with her as she rails upon her situation with righteous, frustrated – and comic - indignation. ...

Box of Tricks and Sky Studios launch inaugural Screen/Play Award

Box of Tricks and Sky Studios’ Innovation Hub based in Leeds have teamed up to announce the launch of the Screen/Play Award to discover exceptional writers from the North of England. The project is focussed on finding talent from communities currently underrepresented on stage and screen offering two writers with no TV writing experience a bursary to write a new play for Box of Tricks, and to open doors to the world of screenwriting by forging a development partnership with Sky Studios throughout 2021. The award is open to Northern writers, aged over 18, with no professional TV experience, from the following communities: D/deaf, disabled and neurodivergent writers, LGBTQ+ writers, writers of colour, first generation migrant writers and writers from a low socioeconomic background.&nbs...
