Let me let you into a little secret. When soloists embark on their concerto cadenza (an extended, elaborate virtuosic solo segment where the orchestra stops playing and the soloist takes centre stage) I stop watching what they are doing and ‘people-watch’ the orchestra and conductor. For there are few things better than watching professionals acknowledge professionals – putting their own instruments down, enrapt, leaning forward for a better look at the action, smiling and even nodding in appreciation at the skill of their fellow performer. I don’t know how many people my age will remember what they were doing on their 25th birthday. I certainly don’t – probably some real ale bar in Oxford with sticky floors and beer at £2 per pint. But Shekhu Kanneh-Mason, superstar cellist and the third of seven ridiculously talented musician siblings, may well remember the rapturous reception (and impromptu rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’) he received from the audience at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall last night on the occasion of his reaching a quarter-century. “Easy on the banjos!” warned Eric Morecambe when André Previn (or Andrew Preview) famously attempted to conduct the Grieg Piano Concerto in the classic 1971 Morecambe and Wise Christmas Special. The one time I ever saw a banjo on stage with the RLPO my Facebook post quoting this zinging one-liner garnered precisely zero likes. It must be a generation thing. For this 2024 performance, Liverpool welcomed back its prodigal son and former Chief Conductor, Vasily Petrenko. This delightful and varied evening of short classical pieces featured three outstanding players from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra - Cormac Henry on flute, Catherine Marwood on viola and Elizabeth McNulty on harp. I have to say that the combination of all three instruments produced the most exquisitely magical sound, and indeed all three musicians gave stellar performances throughout the evening. The concert featured Jean-Phillippe Rameau’s beautiful baroque piece Pieces de Clavecin (1706), it is such a dazzling and extravagant piece of work and one of the finest examples of early baroque music. This delightful concert of short musical gems featured flautist Helen Wilson accompanied by pianist Benjamin Powell. All six pieces included in this performance spanned four centuries and three continents and both Wilson and Powell performed with great relish and precision. The concert featured the beautiful and haunting Flute Sonata in F,Op.1 No 2 composed by Anna Bon who was born in Italy in 1738. This particular sonata (in three movements) was originally composed around 1756 and shows an exquisite emotional depth. Wilson’s performance is utter perfection. Danza de la Mariposa by the American composer Valerie Coleman is a modern piece that is inspired by the various types of butterflies that live across South America. Domingo Hindoyan’s second season as Chief Conductor started in fine style with a programme of Central European masterpieces, with Janáček’s mighty orchestral Sinfonietta paired with Mahler’s heavenly song-symphony to herald – with trumpets and sleighbells respectively – the musical delights to come, including the Liverpool debut of the brilliant Czech soprano, Kateřina Kněžíková. Leoš Janáček (1854-1928) composed his Sinfonietta in 1926 with its first performance on 26th June of that year in Prague.
