I was intrigued – as an avid Shakespeare fan, frequent visitor to the amazing Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescott and having an avid fascination of the venomous Richard III (as most people have), I was really looking forward to seeing Richard III a one person show in the intimate Brite theatre. To cover the unscrupulous story of Richard III - a King renowned for his deformed body as much as his villainous ways, (his notoriety recently escalated due to his remains being found in a Leicester car park), was, I would imagine be no mean feat. Richard III – Shakespeare at Traquair

This outdoor spectacle is staged in promenade, with scenes taking place at locations around the beautiful gardens of Traquair House in the Scottish Borders. Shakespeare at Traquair has been an annual tradition since 1995, and this year, director Leah Moorhouse has chosen Richard III, the play which contains many of Shakespeare’s best insults. For me, the highlight of the show was Rhiannon King’s badass Queen Margaret. Her animalistic movements converge with her swaggering delivery to invoke a force of nature. I am not a believer in otherworldly powers, but if she cursed me, I would be properly scared. I also loved Faye Turpie-Laird’s performance as the aristocratically camp Catesby. She is compelling to watch, even when she is standing still on the periphery of the stage. ...

What is the right way to do Shakespeare? Is there a right way? Is there only one way? How are his characters seen today, and what do they mean for today's audiences? Adjoah Andoh takes a bold swing at one of Shakespeare's most hateful villains, and strikes the audience with wit. This staging of Richard III, coproduced by Rose Theatre and Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse Theatre, toys with the idea that the non-able bodied title character is being judged by his appearance more than his actions. All the historical explanations notwithstanding, it is interesting to think about discrimination and marginalization based on physical appearance. Richard III – Liverpool Playhouse

This production from Rose Theatre and Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse Theatres in association with Swinging the Lens sees director Adjoa Andoh take the treacherous tale of Richard III and reset it in the Cotswolds of her youth, complete with Maypole and Morris Dancing, and with the emphasis in line with more modern re-interpretations of Richard as a much-maligned character who having been punched down all of his life, decides to punch back.
