The Ballads of Billy The Kid – Royden Park

There sure was some hootin’ and a-rootin’ and plenty of a-shootin’ when Off The Ground Theatre rode into town…well to be precise Royden Park, Wirral.  In the beautiful setting under threatening skies we sat, as the cast of ten, successfully multi-roled, in their version of Billy the Kid. In fact four Billys, hence the plural title of ‘Ballads’.  Off the Ground are known for their excellent physical approach to theatre and interesting storytelling with plenty of audience participation- all that was in abundance tonight. This is a professional touring show with many of their troupe newly graduated actors but still with familiar faces who have been touring with them for a good few years. With a superb, really interesting soundscape designed by Mat Oliphant, well executed with ev...

The Ballads of Billy the Kid set for Summer tour

Off the Ground Theatre are taking a trip to the Wild West for the first time this summer, with The Ballads of Billy the Kid. The famous outlaw and desperado who made his name as a gunslinger and fearsome cowboy in Arizona and New Mexico is the hero of this brand new play, from the minds of OTG graduates Mat Oliphant and Connor Wray. Taking in venues across the North West, Wales and Ireland, this summer’s showdown promises to be a barnstorming, darn tootin’ hoedown of drama and delights, hilarity and big characters! An all new piece of writing, this play makes use of different storytelling devices to whistle through the life of one of the West’s most notorious outlaws, Billy the Kid. An ensemble cast of 10 take on all roles across the stories, showing us what happens when unfortunate...

Off the Ground Theatre – Love’s Labour’s Lost

It may have been 2 long years coming, having been postponed due to Covid-19, but Off the Ground Theatre are overjoyed to finally be able to bring their production of Love’s Labour’s Lost to audiences across the north west of England and Wales this summer. This summer will also see OTG return to Ireland for the first time since the summer of 2019, making this production all the more exciting. Shakespeare’s most poetic play, this is a comedy all about love in its many forms, and what hapless, beautiful young people will do to find it. Ferdinand, King of the idyllic Navarre region of Spain, has sworn a vow with his three closest friends, and most trusted advisers, to avoid the company of women, too fast and to sleep just three hours a day for three years, so they can devote themselves ...

The Drunks – Hope Street Theatre

Off the Ground Theatre’s The Drunks, directed by Dan Meigh, is a darkly comic political satire, exploring themes of incompetent politicians, mental health issues and the impact that self-interested motives can have on your relationships with the people around you. Utilising surreal comedy and loud, brash personalities, this story of a small Russian town mirrors the wider world overrun with fake news, bumbling politicians and forgetting your worries in a heavy and mindless binge drinking session. The play opens with the ensemble cast entering in monochrome costumes and drinking greedily from silver hip flasks. The uniform effect of the costumes is dampened slightly by a pair of oxblood shoes worn by one of the actors as black shoes for all cast members would have emphasised the fixed fa...
