Handbagged – Theatr Clwyd

Written by Moira Buffini, we are taken back between 1979 and 1990 during Margaret Thatcher’s three terms as Prime Minister and her weekly meetings with Queen Elizabeth 2nd. Theatr Weston is in the round for this performance with the stage in the centre. A raised round stage with cleverly laid props and costume pieces laid on stands around the lower part of the stage, those of which are used throughout the show by the two male cast members to help transform them in to numerous characters with a lot of help from our imagination. The play starts with Alexandra Mathie entering the stage waiting for one of the men to bring her a chair. She doesn’t need a chair, but she doesn’t want them to know that. She is followed closely by Meriel Scholfield as Queen Elizabeth 2nd, dragging a chair beh...

Handbagged – The Lowry

Moira Buffini’s Handbagged has been revived and brought back to the stage and is currently at The Lowry as part of its UK Tour. Directed by Alex Thorpe; this revival is as sharp, funny, and thought-provoking as ever. Exploring the imagined private conversations between Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher, the play deftly balances political satire while exploring power, duty, and legacy from these two iconic women in UK’s history. The brilliance of Handbagged lies in its unique dual-casting, with two actors playing each of the leading figures at different points in their lives. Morag Cross delivers a commanding performance as the older Thatcher, bringing both steely determination and flashes of vulnerability to the role. Emma Ernest, as the younger Mags, captures the rising polit...

Handbagged – Wolverhampton Grand Theatre

I overhear the couple behind me, probably in their twenties. One says, “Did you get the references?” the other replies, “I’ve seen ‘The Crown’ so I get the gist…” I suddenly feel very old and the details of Moira Buffini’s play, which were once at the political forefront for all of us over fifty, seem strangely distant and tepid. The Miner’s Strike and Section 28, once viscerally crucial, are thrown into quaint relief by the Trumpian carnival currently erupting across the water. What was once breaking news is now the fading past. Those of us who got the references - and the play is stuffed with them; Heseltine’s hair, Howe’s dullness - are happily served but what of the pair behind me? “Handbagged” appeared in its full form in 2014 within living memory of the events portrayed and only j...
