The Addams Family Live in Concert – London Palladium

Act normal. Wear a black dress or pinstripe suit. Paint your face and snap along. At the London Palladium it’s Halloween in February. Copious amounts of fog billow forth from the palatial stage and the theatre is bathed in purple light as audiences amble in, many dressed for the special occasion and already buzzing with excitement. The orchestra, unlike the assembled spirits of the dead, remains unseen but makes its presence known in a vigorous overture playing jauntily under conductor Andrew Hilton, and is energetically reinforced by a skilled ensemble dancing in choreography by Alistair David. Consistently visually interesting even as the plot stretches itself thin and tired jokes leave audiences groaning, this rendition of a mid-tier musical is nonetheless entertaining and well perfo...

The Wizard of Oz – London Palladium

Life is but a dream on the other side of the rainbow. One that we live vividly and share with others to be better understood. And a yellow brick road through which we hop joyfully, finding others to help along the way. The return of the all-time classic The Wizard of Oz, adapted from the book by L. Frank Baum, with the music of Harold Arlen and Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by E.Y. Harburg and Tim Rice, brings new images to the well-known story of this girl from Kansas and her slightly naughty little dog. This staging has Colin Richmond as the set designer, Shay Barclay as choreographer, George Dyer as musical director, and Nikolai Foster as the director. The story follows Dorothy, played by Georgina Onuorah, who lives in a farm with her uncle Henry, played by Geoffrey Aymer, and her a...

The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Show – London Palladium

Rib tickling funny and hopeful! The divas of the queer universe of RuPaul’s Drag Race have arrived in London. And in a blink, this marks the duo’s fifth self-written holiday show produced and directed by BenDeLaCreme and Jinkx Monsoon. In London for three days with a UK-wide tour, they bring oomph, holiday cheer and pragmatism. They bring together the best of drag, dance, and duets with entertainment that is sharp as chilli and cuddly as your favourite teddy bear. They sleigh through the decades trying to find that one moment that must have led to this ever-declining hellscape we face. They take us through the past eras of change. A critical look also at how the ‘save the planet’ jargon has transformed over the past years, always putting the onus on individual actions to avert commun...

Beauty and the Beast – London Palladium

Extravagant. Exuberant. Exhilarating. I could expound so many other ‘E’s you’d feel as if you were on a hallucinogenic drug-induced trip. Which is exactly what it feels like watching the stupendously spectacular revival of Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ The story needs no introduction, but if you’ve been hidden away for longer than the Covid pandemic, let me remind you: a handsome prince is rude to an old woman who turns him into a beast and the only way of escaping the spell is to find true love. In a nutshell, it’s a classic love story of finding beauty within. Fortunately for the audience, this production has beauty everywhere and I mean everywhere. It is stunning in its scenery (Stanley A. Meyer) and costumes (Ann Hould-Ward) and dripping with the sort of outrageously expensive...

Here Come The Boys – London Palladium

After more than a year starved of live theatre, it is not surprising that the socially distanced and masked audience for Here Come The Boys is champing at the bit, wildly enthusiastic, and totally up for an evening of sparkling entertainment. And they certainly get that in this show. Here Come The Boys toured to sold-out theatres in 2019 and the performers are clearly as keen to get back into the swing as the audience.  The four lead dancers, calling themselves the "Kings of Dance", are Strictly stars present and past Aljaž Škorjanec, Pasha Kovalev, Graziano di Prima and Robin Windsor.  They are joined by Nadiya Bychkova representing the ladies, Strictly finalist Karim Zeroual as dancer and MC, and a large dance ensemble. The vibe of the show is Strictly on steroids, a dance p...
