Single White Female – Richmond Theatre

Ostensibly based on the early 90s erotic thriller of the same name, Single White Female really only takes on the idea of a disturbed stalker moving in and disrupting lives. It updates the setting to take on social media, photoshop and school bullying. There isn’t really much to do with the original film, vast swatches of the plot removed, new pieces added and a dramatically different ending.  Faced with a sudden drop in finances, Allie (Lisa Faulkner), and her 15-year-old daughter Bella (Amy Snudden) take in a lodger, Hedda (Kym Marsh) in their new apartment. As Hedda settles in, it becomes clear - she thinks of herself as more than a lodger and oversteps boundaries, first tentatively then increasingly inserting herself into every aspect of their world.  The suggestion that He...

Single White Female – Sheffield Lyceum

‘Single White Female’ is an intense psychological thriller, adapted by Rebecca Reid from the iconic 1992 film under the same name, but with a modern twist for its 2026 audience. The script takes many creative liberties in updating the story from the source material, but generally does so fluidly, despite the occasional already-outdated reference and odd pacing of the end of the second act. The play follows Allie and her teenage child Bella, as they navigate life in a skyscraper apartment. Allie’s ex-husband, Sam, tells her his new fiancée is pregnant and cannot afford to support them, so Graham (Allie’s coworker and best friend) encourages her to look for a roommate. Online they quickly find Hedy. Hedy’s relationship grows with both Allie and Bella, but things take a turn for the worst,...

Single White Female – Opera House

Single White Female at the Opera House Manchester brings a glossy and unsettling slice of 90s psychological thriller into the modern theatrical spotlight. Adapted from the original 1992 film by Rebecca Reid and directed by Gordon Greenberg, this stage version walks a careful line between homage and reinvention. The plot centres on Allie, a recently separated single mother attempting to rebuild her life after the breakdown of her marriage. Advertising for a lodger, she welcomes the seemingly friendly and helpful Hedy into her home. What begins as a tentative friendship soon spirals into obsession as Hedy gradually insinuates herself into every aspect of Allie’s life, blurring identities, manipulating relationships/friendships and threatening the fragile stability Allie has worked so hard...
