Legally Blonde The Musical – Daneside Theatre

On a dark and dreary October evening, The Daneside Theatre in Congleton was glowing with hot-pink and the productions opening night appeared lively and high-spirited. Directed by Jill Mason, the Congleton Musical Theatre’s rendition of Heather Hach’s ‘Legally Blonde: The Musical’ is kitsch, cringe and wonderfully camp. The musical is based on both Amanda Brown’s novel and the 2001 hit-movie starring Reese Witherspoon, following the journey of the ‘Malibu-Barbie’, Elle Woods, as she navigates her way through Harvard Law School and eventually dispels all stereotypes of her ‘Legally Blonde’ persona. The curtain opens to Elle (Abbie Lloyd) and her ‘Delta Nu’ Sorority Sister’s performance of ‘Omigod you guys’, a flamboyant number that immediately characterised Elle and her love for War...

Legally Blonde – Floral Pavilion

Omigod you guys! I didn’t realise I was coming to see an amateur production of Legally Blonde the Musical at the Floral last night and, were it not for a couple of tiny microphone glitches, I’d have been none the wiser. From crowd-rousing curtain-up to fabulous finale, it was as polished and perfect a gem of a show as you’d pay top dollar to see. Running until Saturday, there’s still time to nab some seats for this Wallasey Musical Theatre Company production. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know that it’s a piece of fairytale froth as a story, where the assertion is that you can be both brainy and blonde, principled and a princess. Elle Woods, a lethal combination of girlish naivety and steely determination, applies for Harvard Law School (despite having majored in Fashion Merchan...

Legally Blonde – Saint Stephens Theatre

Sound Events Scotland returns to the Fringe for a second year with their successful musical, Legally Blonde. Elle Wood (Taylor Crum, 19) totters her way to authenticity and love as she outsmarts the self-righteous Harvard elite and her ex-boyfriend, Warner (Aaron Hastings), in a high-octane, chirpy tale of a girl coming into her power through her wits and not her tits. Crum is currently in her third year of musical theatre at Hamilton Theatre Arts, Glasgow. She sings and dances, balancing effortlessly on six-inch stilettoes. She has more to offer and will be a fully rounded professional performer when she finds her ultimate groove and dives deep into characterisation. Musical Theatre is a demanding genre, if you can crack the full spectrum and include detailed characterisation, the ...

Legally Blonde – Opera House, Blackpool

A wonderful, vibrant, colourful evening of song and dance this evening at The Winter Gardens, Blackpool. Encore Productions brought us an array of local talent taking us on a journey of the classic story that we all know from the movie of the same name. The show follows the character Elle Woods on a journey from a Barbieesque sorority girl, to attending Harvard law school, in the hopes of winning back her ex-boyfriend. With choreography and musical direction from industry professionals the cast were in good hands, Natalie Pollard provided creative routines and ‘Whipped the dancers into shape’ Ed Rugman ‘used the talented singers to provide a well rounded, strong ensemble with nice clean harmonies. The cast were full of energy and some outstanding performances this evening that would ...

Legally Blonde – Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre

It’s inspiring when women want to be more than a pretty face, which is the popular appeal of Legally Blonde. Based on the 2001 movie, Lucy Moss has revamped the story for today’s audience, while still keeping the nostalgia cues alive for those who love the original. The plot is simple: boy ditches girl because she’s not clever enough for him and his glittering Harvard Law School career. Girl decides to prove him wrong and turns her fun, party life around securing a place at Harvard where the plan is to win back the douche-bag by proving she’s not an air-head, but a totally ass-busting-legal-whizz. For me, that’s the first (of many) yawning stereotypes and a source of friction, but I tried to set my morals aside and get into the fizzy, fun time. This is a big stage production and the ...

Legally Blonde – Champness Hall Function Room

OMIGOD you guys! Legally Blonde, one of my favourite modern musicals has been undertaken by Rochdale Musical Theatre Company. The hit movie starring Reece Witherspoon brought to life on stage, accompanied by a brilliantly vibrant soundtrack with endless showstoppers. It tells the story of fashion-savvy Malibu girl, Elle Woods, who finds her life turned upside down when she’s dumped by boyfriend Warner. In an effort to win him back she finds out she’s more than just a pretty blonde as she heads to Harvard and takes on a journey of self-discovery where she learns “being true to yourself never goes out of style”. If you’re not familiar with the stage show, it’s a high energy explosion of pink and girl power! It’s a show that requires a large cast full of triple-threats as it’s packed wi...
