Julius Caesar – The Lowry

‘Friends, Romans, Countrymen; lend me your ears!’ Julius Caesar contains some of William Shakespeare’s most quoted lines, and in fact this play begins with Caesar celebrating the height of his power and influence and being faced with a stark warning to ‘Beware the Ides of March’. What follows is a dramatic exposition of the struggles of power, that is equally relevant today in 2023 as it was when it was published in 1599. This play calls on us to consider whether our actions can be justified on the basis of their goal, and whether it is a right or a duty to speak truth to those in authority. Julius Caesar – Royden Park

All Hail Hillbark! Electrifying! It’s the time of year we sit out on a beautiful evening in Royden Park, to be entertained by Hillbark Players’ bi-annual, open-air production. Julius Caesar, performed by the crème de la crème of Wirral actors, opened tonight with sunshine and blue skies: thankfully, no thunder and lightning but it was definitely an electrifying production! If you’re thinking it’s a stuffy play with old men in togas – think again! I’m not one for over doing the superlatives but I just might run out of them tonight. Julius Caesar – Alhambra Bradford

Many moons ago the RSC came to my small northern town putting on a production of Henry IV, Part One which blew my teenage mind, and one can only hope that the school group waiting patiently in the foyer to see this challenging version tale of the price of power would have the same transformative experience. It’s a coup for the Alhambra to bring this production from Strafford as Atri Banerjee is one of the new breed of RSC directors determined to make the Bard’s words resonate with new audiences, so no togas or laurel wreaths as the big cast wander around in dress shirts, vests and sweatpants. This version which takes some risks has divided audiences, which all good theatre should do. Julius Caesar – Shakespeare’s Globe

On the 25th Anniversary of The Shakespeare’s Globe, this strong season shows an incredible round of talent taking us through Henry VIII, Much Ado about Nothing and Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar directed by Diane Page, highlights the passionate love between Brutus and Cassius played by Anna Crichlow and Charlotte Bate who start this journey to overthrow Caesar played by Dickon Tyrrell. Crichlow and Bate portrayed their relationship with such a vulnerability of sisterhood defeating and elevating Brutus to their true position on the pedestal. I thought Charlotte Bate playing Cassius was fantastic, the character was so entrancing with their ability to fall into Cassius’ beliefs and passions that with their inevitable end I was so moved and quite devastated by not seeing them again.
