The word ‘Aberfan’ may not mean too much to the world nowadays, but nearly 60 years ago in October 1966, it was the scene of one of the most tragic events in post-war British history.  On that day 144 people - 112 of them children - died when a 150,000-tonne coal heap engulfed a school in that small Welsh mining village. The elusive Christopher Marlowe (Nicholas Thorne) is a character from history that intrigues us today, how did he die at age 29, was it a bar room brawl or was he murdered?  Was Kit Marlowe the real author of the Bard’s plays?  Many books have been written on this subject, and we are no closer to knowing if any of the theories are true. Everyone should watch this show. And I mean everyone. As a 21-year-old man, it would be easy to assume that I wasn’t the target audience for a performance about a middle-aged woman’s relationship with her sexuality and her body. But that could not be more wrong. Anna Friend has devised an utterly hilarious, and incredibly moving, play about the struggles that women go through from such an early age to feel ‘sexy’ and desirable. She charts the course of her relationship to this struggle throughout her life. Beginning with when she first watched porn at the age of 11, to her more recent revelation that she is in fact bisexual. This lively musical, set in Fife, returns to the Fringe and with memorable characters, delightful songs and plenty of laughs.  The show is based on John Watt’s folk song of the same name and written by Willie Logan and John Murray. Avast there. What, pray, is this: Julee Cruise plays as we enter the room and take in the bare, tastefully-lit stage. Where is HE? TWONKEY should be fiddling with and setting an array of props, muttering comfortingly to himself (and us) as we take our seats. Velvet Determination is an autobiographical performance about, and starring, Cynthia Shaw, detailing her experience as a pianist growing up in Colorado with aspirations of making it to New York. Despite being the only performer on stage throughout the piece, Shaw retains the audience's attention from the get-go through both her dialogue and live piano playing. Dressed in a bright, floral dress, Shaw’s costume matches her warm, friendly personality, helping the audience to tune in to her story. Shaw is not an actor - but this is not a piece of theatre. Velvet Determination is a real story and Shaw is able to be genuine and vulnerable in such an intimate setting, something even the finest of actors struggles to get right at times.
