Groan Ups – Sheffield Lyceum

After meeting at Drama school 13 years ago the in suppressible Mischief Theatre members have continued to have us rolling in the aisles with their next instalment Groan Ups. Following on from the successful West End located The Play that goes Wrong, and the Penn and Teller collaboration Magic Goes Wrong; the seasonal Peter Pan Goes Wrong and the standalone The Comedy about a Bank Robbery, the work ethic of Mischief is admirable. Groan Ups takes a slightly different persona to the former being more an observational comedy and does not rely on physical comedy as it’s lynch. It has real moments of nostalgic pathos as it follows the lives of five friends at three intervals in their lives from primary school to the obligatory school reunion. All taking place within a classroom the set reduc...

Groan Ups – The Lowry

Mischief Theatre Has had what could be described as its own residency at the Lowry theatre in the past few weeks; with productions; ‘The Play that Goes Wrong’ and ‘Magic Goes wrong’ all delighting audiences returning to live theatre. Their third production to frequent the Salford Quays theatre this Summer is Groan Ups and it’s a departure from their usual escapades and calamity-laden gags - this is play, with no sets falling down, no props inadvertently missing, it’s something very different. Groan Ups follows the lives of five children as they grow into adults, highlighting three different chapters of their lives on stage. The production opens with the characters being 6-year-olds in the second year of primary school then developing into teenagers and lastly as 30-year-olds at a sc...

A Virtual Alice in Wonderland – Creation Theatre

Creation Theatre have been going strong for 22 years, performing out of the ordinary theatre events, at venues such as castles, gardens, bookshops, factories and tents. They like to interpret well-loved classics and breathe new life into them. The latest offering is Alice in Wonderland, quirkily entitled, as Alice, A Virtual Theme Park.  Taking place on zoom, (described as a multi-platform, multi-choice experience) you are required to attend a series of slapstick, zany meetings - It's great to see the audience participation, no room for bashfulness. Of course, they’re not real meetings but a series of crazy, riotous performances by the cast.  You're thrust into a magical imaginary world, where you might be required to dance to Abba, run on the spot and swim to name a few t...
