Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Alexandra, Birmingham

This loved family favourite bursts from the stage in a riot of colour and energy. BMOS are a well-established and respected amateur company. The fact that they have been chosen as one of only 11 companies nationwide to lead Les Misérables next year, should give you a clue to the quality of their performances and productions. This is the tale of poor Charlie Bucket, who dreams of chocolate. Will he ever get to see inside Wonka’s factory? If he does, what will he find there? Young Charlie (Theo Traat at this performance) seems rarely to leave the stage. His eternal hope and belief in his dream, and his kindness shine through and create a heartwarming performance. Robbie Love as Wonka is a many faceted character, cunning and a touch sinister but also full of wonder and childlike...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Liverpool Empire

If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have probably read the Roald Dahl story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or at least watched one of the two films based on the book (team Gene Wilder over here!). It tells the story of Charlie Bucket, who comes from a poor family and never dreams of winning one of the five golden tickets to enter Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory – until it happens. We then get to go on a magical journey as Charlie and the other four golden ticket winners (and their parents) get to see the wonderous and sometimes scary, workings of Wonka’s factory. If you are used to the book or either film, then make sure you go into the musical with an open mind. Bar two songs from the 1971 film (The Candym...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Musical – Hull New Theatre

Hull city centre was illuminated with the regal colour purple on Thursday evening, in honour of the king of chocolatiers, Mr Willie Wonka, who, along with an amazing cast, crew and orchestra, brought Roald Dahl’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory: The Musical, to life on the Hull New Theatre stage. We theatregoers also got the royal treatment by walking on a plush purple carpet into the venue, itself decorated with purple and gold balloons. What a magnificent start to the autumn season. The story centres around a young lad called Charlie Bucket, who lives with his two sets of bedridden grandparents and his mother in a shack. Charlie (Haydn Court - definitely a future stage star) spends his spare time sifting through the local rubbish site looking for trinkets he can give to hi...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory The Musical – Palace Theatre, Manchester

For the next three weeks, the venerable old Palace Theatre will play host to the UK tour of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory The Musical'. Whilst it will undoubtedly prove a box office success with families seeking distraction at the beginning of the long summer holidays, unfortunately its saccharine sweetness without any of the counteracting sourness left me feeling slightly queasy by the conclusion. I am not alone in adoring the work of Roald Dahl; his books have sold over 300 million copies worldwide and his work is widely accepted to be amongst the canon of children's literature, everything from 'James and the Giant Peach' to 'The BFG’ has been voraciously read by succeeding generations of schoolchildren over the last six decades. Part of his appeal is that he is deliciously dark...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – New Wimbledon Theatre

Roald Dahl’s iconic tale of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is back once more, this time in a magical musical stage adaptation. This beloved story is of Willy Wonka, the man who is famous for making something out of nothing, who invites five lucky children for a once in a lifetime opportunity to enter his famous chocolate factory by winning a golden ticket hidden inside his chocolate bars. The five children are Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, Mike Teevee and remarkably, Charlie Bucket. As the audience arrives, they are met with an intricate set that is later revealed to be a junkyard full of treasures, arches either side of the stage in the wings create a whimsical feel. The show opens with a female Charlie Bucket (Amelia Minto) in a sweet solo ‘Almost Nearly Perf...

With vibrant and colourful lighting by Tim Mitchell and mystifying video and illusion design from David Callanan and Chris Cox respectively, the show lives up to the expectations of the book as well as the two movie adaptations from 1971 and 2005. A notable moment where it is as though you are watching the film live in front of your eyes comes from the four grandparents. Although not on stage as a full four ...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Musical – Leeds Playhouse

Every festive season Leeds Playhouse tick off the work of a brilliant children’s writer and this time it’s the undisputed master of devilish delights Roald Dahl. It’s a doubly bold move taking on his most beloved book that had already spawned West End and Broadway versions of this production, two film versions, and Gene Wilder’s cinematic take on mysterious sweet factory owner Willy Wonka is rightly seen as the definitive version. Wonka launches a worldwide competition for five kids to visit his factory if they can find a golden ticket in one of his chocolate bars, and among the loathsome children who win is Charlie Bucket.  He’s a decent kid full of ideas living in grinding poverty with his single mum, and four grandparents who share a bed in the attic. Once inside the factory...
