Thingwall players should be very proud of themselves for their fun and energetic retelling of the traditional tale Sleeping Beauty. From the moment we entered it was a welcoming atmosphere. With a cast of mixed ages with excellent chemistry which shines through on the stage ensuring their audience leaves with a smile.
One thing to note, this venue is a small, cozy and intimate venue which would be a fantastic performance to see for any children or adults who struggle with crowds or larger venues. But don’t underestimate the talent and execution of this performance based on the venue size. It will have you beaming from ear to ear all the way home.
Don’t be fooled into thinking this is just an ordinary retelling of the tale. Brilliantly written by Nigel Holmes but superbly directed by Paul Arends who has added their own twist to a traditional tale including a time travel and a wacky excitable soothsayer (Michelle Forder) who keeps the story ticking along nicely and some great up to date music for you to sing and dance along to. The performance will provide you with plenty of laughs with comedy aimed at both children and adults.
The cast were full of energy and this was exuded into the audience, they kept us involved, entertained and wanting more. Every member of the cast shone brightly however, I must mention some stand out performances from the hilarious Nurse Nanny Knoo played by Zoran Blackie, Knud played by Connor Jones who kept the audience involved and laughing which is no easy task in a small venue and my personal favourite who had me captivated by her mannerisms and sarcastic responses Fairy Nightshade played by Jasmine Oates. A special mention to Bethany Cragg and Natasha Cragg who stepped into role due to cast illness this week. This was not obvious to us as an audience, what an excellent job you did.
With perfectly timed cues, great atmosphere, fun costumes (especially the clever way of producing a hedge), audience participation and an amazingly welcoming and outstanding cast this is a show not to be missed. Thank you Thingwall players for a brilliant performance and evening.
