Sister Act, the hit musical comedy directed by Bill Buckhurst is touring the UK and this week is at the beautiful Buxton Opera House. The larger than life production delivers an evening of joyous entertainment and powerful performances. Based on the beloved 1992 film, this production brings together a stellar cast, bright and bold staging and impeccable comedic timing.
Former Coronation Street star Wendi Peters shines as Mother Superior, bringing a perfect blend of stern authority and underlying warmth to her role. Her comic timing and vocal prowess add depth to the character, making her a memorable anchor for the show.
Landi Oshinowo as Deloris Van Cartier is a revelation. Her portrayal of the nightclub singer turned nun on the run is both heartfelt and hilarious. Oshinowo’s powerful voice and infectious energy captivate the audience from her first entrance, effortlessly carrying the show through its comedic highs and emotional moments. Her chemistry with the other cast members, particularly Peters, adds a layer of authenticity and you can’t help rooting for her throughout.
Special mention must be made of Alfie Parker as Eddie Souther, the endearingly awkward cop with a soft spot for Deloris. Parker’s performance is charming, with his solo number “I Could Be That Guy” being a standout moment, showcasing both his vocal talent and comic flair.
Eloise Runnette’s Sister Mary Robert is another highlight. Her transformation from a shy, timid novice to a confident, soaring vocalist is beautifully portrayed. Runnette’s rendition of “The Life I Never Led” is a poignant and powerful performance that leaves a lasting impression.
The ensemble cast deliver harmonious vocals and some fantastic choreography by Alistair David, adding to the overall energy and vibrancy of the production. The clever set design and costumes by Morgan Large further enhance the show with a beautiful stained glass window backdrop, transporting the audience to the heart of the convent and the lively streets of Philadelphia.
Bill Buckhurst’s direction ensures that the pace never lags, balancing humour and heart effortlessly. Sister Act at Buxton Opera House is a must-see, offering a divine dose of laughter, music, and a feel-good story that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Verdict: A Divine dose of laughter, music & fun at the theatre!
