Sarah Hester Ross – Serving C*nt is bold, raw, gloriously unapologetic, and exactly the kind of show that thrives at the Edinburgh Fringe. From the moment Sarah steps into the room, she makes it clear that this is not going to be a quiet or cautious hour. Instead, she serves up a sharp, musical, and fiercely funny performance that celebrates confidence, womanhood, and the power of saying exactly what you mean.
This is refreshing, but I have to say that I was feeling a little exposed as a man, I needn’t have, as Sarah put it, I was welcome if I was well behaved. I was.
Playing at The Den at Gilded Balloon Teviot, the show has the feel of an intimate cabaret gig mixed with stand-up comedy and musical theatre. Sarah moves between comic songs, hilarious audience engagement, and punchy spoken sections with impressive ease. Her material is cheeky and provocative, but it is never simply outrageous for the sake of it. Beneath the humour is a clear message about self-worth, resilience, and refusing to shrink yourself to make others comfortable.
Sarah is a flawless performer with a powerhouse voice allowing every song to land with impact. Just as importantly, her comic timing is razor sharp. She knows when to push a joke, when to pause, and when to let the audience catch up with her. There is a natural warmth behind the confidence, which helps the more direct or risqué moments feel inclusive rather than alienating. She commands the space, but you never feel on the fringes of the comedy, more part of the whole experience.
The writing has a raw and soulful quality. The songs are well crafted, memorable, and not surprisingly clever, using humour to make astute observations about gender, expectations, and everyday absurdities.
While the show is deliberately loud and mischievous in tone, it also has heart. Sarah balances sass with sincerity, giving the performance a real punch.
The Den is a fitting venue to provide a real intimate vibe, that Sarah uses to her advantage. The result is a genuine, fast paced and fearless Fringe performance.
For audiences who enjoy comedy with music, bite, and a generous offering of attitude, Serving C*nt is a thoroughly entertaining hour which will satisfy. If you are easily offended this is maybe not the show for you, but if that is a must, get there soon as some dates are sold out. Sarah Hester Ross delivers a confident, polished, and empowering show that earns its five stars.
