Quiz – Altrincham Garrick Playhouse

Quiz has become one of those modern plays that feels instantly familiar, and yet still thrilling, and James Graham’s sharp, playful script proves a perfect fit for the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse in this brilliantly executed production by the Garrick Ensemble at the Playhouse. Based on the infamous “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” coughing scandal, this production leans fully into the spectacle of television, celebrity and courtroom drama, while never losing sight of the human stories at its core.

Tom Broughton delivers a compelling performance as Charles Ingram, capturing both the awkwardness and quiet determination of a man thrust into the harsh glare of public judgement. Melanie Beswick is equally impressive as Diana Ingram, offering a nuanced portrayal that balances vulnerability with steely resolve. Ben Walsh brings an assured confidence and charm to the role of Chris Tarrant, while Dan Ellis impressively switches between Adrian Pollock and a host of other recognisable figures, from Jim Bowen to Des O’Connor, with energy and precision. Strong support comes from Ella Muscroft as the formidable Sonia Woolley QC and Jay Wise Martin as Nicholas Hilliard QC, alongside Jamie King as Paul Smith, Paddy Spooner and Adrian Woolfe, all contributing to a richly layered ensemble.

One of the real triumphs of this production is its high quality set design, which perfectly recreates the iconic game show aesthetic. The design cleverly incorporates lighting, screens and even real life audience members seated on stage, blurring the lines between performers and spectators. James Merrington’s lighting design plays a crucial role in shifting the tone between glossy television entertainment and tense courtroom drama with ease and flair.

Directed with confidence and imagination by Joseph Meighan, Quiz is an impressively interactive experience. Audience members are invited on stage to play game show style rounds, everyone is given electronic keypads to vote on key moments, and pens and paper are handed out to take part in a pub quiz, keeping the audience fully engaged throughout.

Entertaining, inventive and expertly staged, this production is a testament to the talent both on stage and behind the scenes at the Garrick.

Verdict: A clever, interactive and utterly gripping night of theatre.

Quiz continues at the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse until 7th February at 7:30pm nightly with an additional matinee on the 7th. https://www.altrinchamgarrick.co.uk/
