Northern Ballet announce 10 city autumn tour

Northern Ballet have announced a 10 city autumn tour will visit 10 cities revising The Little Mermaid and The Nutcracker, plus a première of new work Three Short Ballets 2022.

The season will open with performances of Three Short Ballets 2022 at Leeds Playhouse featuring three world premières by choreographers Dickson Mbi, Stina Quagebeur and Mthuthuzeli November. This new work will also be performed at the Linbury Theatre in London in October / November.

Throughout September and October, The Little Mermaid will tour to Sheffield, Belfast, Southampton and Newcastle. This timeless classic fairy tale was David Nixon’s last full-length work for the Company before announcing his retirement as Artistic Director in 2020.

It’s set to a Celtic-inspired score by Sally Beamish with set design by Kimie Nakano as Nixon’s reimagines, a young mermaid falling in love with a mortal Prince and leaving her magical underwater world behind.

For Christmas 2022 Nixon’s festive favourite The Nutcracker returns to the stage for the first time since 2018 set to the famous Tchaikovsky score. The production features Regency-style sets by Charles Cusick Smith and Nixon’s own costume designs.

In the midst of a family party Clara is caught up in the warmth and excitement of Christmas and becomes enthralled by her new Nutcracker doll. But, as the clock strikes midnight, her Nutcracker proves to be no ordinary toy. Clara is whisked away on the magical journey of a lifetime through a winter wonderland of dancing snowflakes and the famous Sugar Plum Fairy.

The Little Mermaid and The Nutcracker are accompanied by live music performed by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
