The story of sister Rosetta Tharpe and Marie Knight is not a well-known one. Rosetta played by Beverley Knight was known as the ‘Godmother of Rock and Roll’ in the 1930’s and 40’s taking Gospel music to a whole new level. Donned with an electric guitar she moved with swing and soul influencing artists like Chuck Berry, Little Richard and well before the uprising of Elvis, Hendrix and other rock roll greats. Rosetta’s drive was to be true to herself with her music creating a fusion of her faith and soulful blues rock.
Ntombizodwa Ndlovu debuts as Marie Knight a young woman married to a preacher man with two children who teams up with Rosetta to create a partnership that would prove to be more than just creating music. The women become aligned to each other’s strengths, vulnerabilities and desire to break through boundaries and make a statement. The mentorship Rosetta provides Marie was reciprocated through grace, dedication and committed love, just pure joy.
The score and songs are unique from traditional African American Christian Gospel fused with blues, jazz and syncopated rhythms. ‘This Train, I Want a Tall Skinny Papa’ Peace in the Valley add to a unique songbook.
This production celebrates a black history never to be forgotten. All the performers and orchestral musical team led by Liam Godwin are black actors-artistes, unique to the point it couldn’t be more authentic. Their style and contribution elevated this play. You are with Rosetta and Marie in their navigation of life and in their environment. George Brant’s writing and Touko’s direction is ‘genius’ in showcasing a part or Rosetta’s story giving it life on stage. The costumes were demure and respectful of the and era oozed style.
Two soulful ‘power houses’ Knight and Ndlovu are at one on stage, a vision to behold. Be prepared to be educated into rock and roll history. “Rosetta an extraordinary legend” Marie the perfect complement to this dynamic duo.
This flawless play is quintessentially funny, stylish and enlightens the unjust and lack of recognition of the contribution Rosetta and Marie made to rock and roll music.
