Kevin Quantum: Anti-Gravity – Guilded Balloon, Patter House

With a great time slot in a beautiful magical space (dark red walls and mythical themed golden plaques) in a very central location and a carefully curated child-friendly show, Kevin may have got everything just about perfect this year, particularly for the family market. Sold out and with a wide and varied demographic, the ever-likeable Kevin is on excellent form interacting to great effect with kids and adults alike in a show which is surprisingly high on humour as well as magic in what I see as a significant change for the better over previous years. High on audience participation and interaction right from the start, this show keeps you on your toes and scratching your head, the hour certainly flew by.

Having spent half of his adult life studying physics and half studying magic, Magic Circle member and ex-student of Penn & Teller, Fife man Kevin seeks to combine the two fields and certainly has the credentials to be taken seriously.

The show is packed full of invisible forces, manipulation, deception, slight of hand and possibly hypnosis (?) which sees dads jumping off chairs, unable to lift chairs or let go of chairs. Chairs play a starring role! Finishing with the ultimate levitation trick, but the one that blows my socks off and has the crowd gasping involves Kevin simply levitating a folded dollar bill, showing, with hands circling the bill, that no strings are attached. Although I’ve seen this trick a few times it has lost none of its bewildering effect. How does he do it? You figure it out!!

If you are looking to keep the kids amused and intrigued at the Fringe this year, and see a great show yourself, you might want to put this one top of the list!
