As the festive season approaches, so does the beloved tradition of pantomimes, and this year the King’s Head Theatre adds its own cheeky twist with Jack and the Beanstalk. The production offers two versions, one family-friendly and one strictly for adults, and it was the adults-only performance that truly pushed the boundaries in the most hilarious way.
This late-night rendition revels in adult humour, packed with innuendos and outrageous character names including the wonderfully provocative Fairy Flick My Bean. Elliott Backer-Costello as Jack and Joseph Lukehurst as the villainous Nightshade showcased brilliant chemistry throughout, especially during their more risqué physical comedy moments. Their playful, exaggerated antics, sometimes ending up in hilariously compromising positions, had the audience howling.
Despite the naughtiness, the structure remains true to classic pantomime form. The familiar tale of Jack and the beanstalk unfolds with all the usual audience participation: enthusiastic booing, call-and-response, and the ongoing joke of shouting “Twat!” each time Jack appears. The script balances tradition with irreverence, creating an atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly unrestrained.
One of the standout performances came from Pavanveer Sagoo as Pat the Cow. His delightfully exaggerated acting suited the pantomime style perfectly, and his unexpected dance breakouts were a genuine highlight. His energy lit up the stage every time he appeared, and the audience responded with well-earned enthusiasm.
Another performer who commanded attention was Victoria Scone as Dame Trott. Their quick wit and razor-sharp comedic timing kept the laughter coming, and their costume changes became a spectacle of their own. Each new outfit was more elaborate and entertaining than the last, leaving the audience eagerly anticipating what Dame Trott would wear next.
The show also cleverly incorporated popular music, transforming familiar hits into cheeky parodies. “Pink Pony Club” became “Pink Coney Club,” while “Sweet Caroline” was humorously reworked into “Sweet Cow of Mine.” These playful musical reimaginings elevated the comedy and added to the joyous, tongue-in-cheek tone of the evening.
Overall, this adults-only pantomime proved that a smaller venue can still deliver big laughs. With a compact stage and modest production values, the show relied on its talented cast, sharp humour, and infectious energy, and succeeded brilliantly. It was a wildly entertaining night out that captured the festive spirit while giving it a wonderfully naughty twist.
