The Heathers opened their candy store with a bang at Leeds Grand last night.
Dang, what you think will be another upbeat American teen musical but this time with not one but three Rizzo’s named the ‘Heathers’, actually takes a dark turn and you soon realise you’re not about to watch another Grease, but a high school musical about damage, destruction and homicide.
Not to worry though it’s all covered with humour, bright lights and toe tapping sing a long songs. The show follows the point of view of none other than low life nobody, ‘Veronica Sawyer’ played by Gerardine Sacdalan who’s itching for popularity until she sees an opportunity and shoots her shot… literally.
The thirst for popularity lands Veronica a spot with the heathers and she enters a candy store full of toxicity, power and bullying. The show really captures a clear representation of teen torment and where it can devastatingly lead to. However, at the same time keeps the audience uplifted with bubbling personalities and catchy lyrics. The crazy contrast between the reality of troubled teens and entertaining dance numbers really is a mix everyone should take interest in.
Murder is mocked not pretentiously but to broadcast the message that kindness is the lesson that should be taught and practiced.
Gerardine as ‘Veronica’ was an absolute icon in this show, her spirit filled the entire theatre and her presence was infectious, not to mention her incredible voice. She truly stole the show along with goofballs ‘Kurt Kelly’ (Markus Sodergren) and ‘Ram Sweeney’ (Beau Jackson) this pair of portentous quarterbacks had the audience in fits of laughter with their eccentric and sarcastic performances of has bin, horny football boys.
The building was full of budding teenagers dressed in red blazers and chequered socks, ready to dance the night away to dead girl walking. It’s fair to say the cheer spirit was high within those four walls and was carried out across the streets of Leeds as everyone fell out of the building full of excitement and serotonin.
