Hairspray – Palace Theatre

Hairspray at the Palace Theatre in Manchester is an absolute delight and easily one of the best feel-good musical experiences. Watching live from the theatre, I couldn’t help but find myself unconsciously joining in with the choreography, swept up in the infectious energy of the performance.

The show brilliantly captures the essence of Hairspray, bringing its vibrant characters and catchy tunes to life. The cast is exceptional, delivering standout performances that are both heartfelt and exhilarating. The exuberance and passion they bring to their roles are palpable, making it impossible not to get caught up in the excitement.

A highlight of the show was the spectacular performance of “You Can’t Stop the Beat.” This number was a true showstopper, filled with energy and joy that had the entire audience tapping their feet and dancing along. The vibrant choreography and powerful vocals made it an unforgettable moment in the production.

The crowd particularly enjoyed the performances of Edna Turnblad (Neil Hurst) and Wilbur Turnblad (Dermot Canavan). Edna’s portrayal was both heartwarming and hilarious, capturing the character’s warmth and comedic flair. Other standout performances included Amber Von Tussle (Allana Taylor), whose portrayal of the spoiled, ambitious teen was both amusing and engaging, and Motormouth Maybelle (Michelle Ndegwa), who delivered powerful vocals and a commanding stage presence that was hard to ignore. The ensemble cast, including the vibrant Corny Collins (Declan Egan) and the sassy Penny Pingleton (Freya McMahon), contributed to a high-energy performance that kept the audience entertained from start to finish.
